Halloween Plea

From where I stand, Halloween ain't what it used to be. And no, I'm not talking about the rise of "stranger danger" phobia that drove kids away from neighborhoods and towards the malls, where retailers encourage a pallid, plastic simulacrum of the old ritual, tasteless as candy corn. Best as I can tell, Wallingford, at least, is past that: the streets have been filled with roving packs of vampires and robots these past few years. No, there are two things that…

RIP Rusty Pelican (more to come?)

The Rusty Pelican has shuttered its Wallingford location after 11 1/2 years. According to a friend of the owners, the store was successful financially, but the owners were unable to renew the lease, as the building's owner, Costas Antonopoulos, is looking to to build a mixed use development on the lot, which includes the rug show next door as well as Murphy's Pub. The Rusty Pelican's Mill Creek and Edmonds locations remain open and their Facebook page states simply: We would like to…

Once and Future Wallingford Skate Park

Remember that skateboard park, Innerspace, down by 35th and Stone Way? It was the only indoor skatepark in Seattle, and it closed last February for the same reason most businesses succumb: more cost than income. But there are dreamers in this town, dreamers who see providing healthy indoor activities for youth in a city notorious for its nine month rain jags as a noble calling. The ski and snowboard retailer evo, which recently built out its space in Wallingford alongside  The…

Grand Unveiling of Community Orchard Designs

Last month, the Freeway Estates Community Orchard solicited input from the neighborhood to help shape the design process for this new community space. While, sadly, zeppelin dock did not make the final cut, plenty of other great ideas did including: food, flowers, classes, butterfly garden, flea market, exercise/play station, P-Patch, solar panels, sound wall movie nights, berries, herbs, HDA walkways, goats, bees, food exchange, tool sharpening and meeting area. Orchard mistress Ruth wrote to invite the neighborhood to convene again for the…

Paleo Food Truck at Wine World

Paleo, in case you've been hiding under a rock, is the new food craze. Embraced by cross-fitters as well as the gluten-free crowd, it eschews grains, dairy and processed food: the principle is that our bodies are adapted to eat the way our ancestors ate when they were evolving, so that's what we should eat, too. Think vegetables and organ meat. When we were down in Portland a couple weeks back, we had some fine eating at the Cultured Caveman food…

Wallingford CVS Update

Jenny Brailey wrote to tell us she spoke with the CVS/Velmeir spokesperson today and this information comes from her as well as the local architect they hired: What CVS is now planning in Wallingford is to keep the existing building in place, remodel the inside and make improvements to the outside to ‘restore its grandeur.’ CVS/Velmeir is NOT interested in a multi-story building with housing on top. They say this is per the wishes of the property owner, who I’m told…
