Alley Scraper

(Ed note: Back in May, we posted a letter from Shannon about a large house being built on a tiny lot up near 55th and Kensington. The letter served as a catalyst for like-minded neighbors finding each other, researching the house and the developer and gathering to take action. We asked Shannon to come back and let readers who didn't follow the comments on the initial letter know what's happened since. Below is her response.) After the initial posting in May…

Smooth Sugaring Studio Opens

Smooth Sugaring Studio is now open in Tangletown, at 1601 N. 52nd Street at Woodlawn Avenue. "What's 'Sugaring'?" you ask? Yeah, well, don't feel bad because I had no idea myself (or maybe it's just me, and if that's the case then, uh, whoops); but here's what I learned from Smooth Sugaring Studio owner, Jill Maurisak: Sugaring is an ancient form of hair removal that uses a paste made from sugar, water and lemon. The sugaring method removes hair in the natural direction…

Garbage Forecast Tomorrow: Iffy

  • Post author:

Due to the Teamster's strike, there's a good chance that the city won't be picking up garbage and recycling tomorrow in Wallingford. Nonetheless, the city instructs that you put your bins out, presumably on the off chance that an agreement is reached: Friday Waste Management customers should still put their garbage, yard waste and recycling out before 7 a.m. tomorrow [Friday]. If collections are missed, carts should be put out next Friday, Aug. 3. If pickup is missed tomorrow, there will…

A Pruner and a Pear Tree

Nearly every house on my block in lower Wallingford sports a fruit tree of historic age, reportedly hearkening back to a time when our section of Wallingford was an orchard. Our home’s tree of advanced age is a pear tree, which rises more than 30 feet into the air and drops thousands of pears each year. [And that’s truth, not hyperbole. One year I picked up 3000 pears]. Each August when the pears start dropping, I think to myself how great…

Skanska law reaches critical stage

Ten months ago, the Wallingford Community Council appealed a City environmental review decision for a proposal to rewrite the Living Building Pilot Program (LBPP) to grant Skanska, a multinational billion dollar developer, special privileges allowing it to build a large office building at Stone Way and 34th. The building would rise to over 82 feet (including substantial roof top features) in a 45 foot zone within feet of the Lake Union Shoreline area. WCC decided on very short notice (Skanska made…
