What in the Wallingford

You know what this neighborhood needs? More gargoyles. You can never have too many gargoyles, in our opinion. Last week's What in the Wallingford contest photo was pretty easy to recognize as a gargoyle, but we had lots of guesses as to which gargoyle it was. As it happens, it's on a house on the corner of NE 54th and 1st Ave NE. Sadly, it seems that whoever lives in that house is not a Wallyhood reader, as nobody responded (correctly)…

Not A Number Raffle for Japan

With the move to their smaller space completed, and the store reopened, Not A Number owners Kara Ceriello and Jon DeLeeuw enlisted members of their Kids Club to raise funds for stranded families in Japan through ShelterboxUSA.org.  Many Wallingford businesses have donated all sorts of goodies for the cause, and Not A Number will hold a series of daily raffle drawings for prizes beginning this Friday, April 1 at 7pm----both in-store and online through their website: NotANumberGifts.com. Rubber Chickens

This Friday, April 1st is just another day for some; but for others, it's April Fools Day.  For Archie McPhee, Friday marks The Great Rubber Chicken Giveaway.  That's right folks, the first 100 people who come in to Archie McPhee this Friday will get their very own rubber chicken.  I happen to think this giveaway is highly appropriate for Wallingford since we're friends of the fowl, and so I hereby proclaim that our neighborhood mascot is the chicken, be it rubber…

Most city-livers are so distant from the sources of what they eat that this seems like magic.  But in her new book Your Farm in the City, Lisa Taylor of Seattle Tilth explains that starting an urban farm is no mystery, but rather something deeply satisfying that we can all do.  Meet Lisa, learn about the…

Wallingford: ‘Crunchy–But in a good way’

Wallingford has been dubbed as one of "The 20 Best Places to Live Now" according to the April issue of Seattle Met. In an interview with Wallyhood's Jordan Schwartz, Seattle Met's Matthew Halverson provides a perspective on our neighborhood's "crunchiness": When Jordan Schwartz moved to Wallingford from the East Coast in 1993, he found a neighborhood overrun by felines. 'You couldn’t walk down the street without seeing cats,' he says. 'They were all over.' Nearly 20 years later, he still feels…
