Hula hoops and devil sticks

During one of my daily walks this week, I spotted this flier next to the east entrance of the Wallingford Playfield.  Not only was I drawn to the elaborate detail on the flier, but I was intrigued by the items listed as missing:  hula hoops, frisbees, and devil sticks.  I figured, someone took a lot of time to create such a flier, and so these items must have sentimental value for that person. When I got home, I called the number…

Wallingford weekend: Hamilton celebration and more

Sadly, the Home Tour isn't taking place this Sunday, but we hope Janet in the Wallingford Neighborhood Office has some homeowners willing to pitch-in for a January 2011 date.  Meantime, there's still plenty of stuff to do around the neighborhood this weekend, including Hamilton's Open House (Molly Moon's ice cream truck will be there, too). If you plan to cycle or run along the Burke Gilman on Saturday, oh, say between 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m., watch out for the little ones from…

Let’s Make A Deal with Greenlake Moms

Have you seen those Daily Deal junkies?  Are you, in fact, secretly one? I used one recently to get a haircut (paying a lot for haircuts is a pet peeve) and the stylist said a huge wave of people cashing it in had come through, all opening up about their deep obsession with getting deals (psychiatrists should do double duty as hairdressers). Well, a very local outlet for those outrageously discounted, virtually irresistible bargains has opened under the aegis of the…

Last Wallingford Farmers Market

We're giving you a days warning: tomorrow, Wednesday September 29th, 2010 is the last Wallingford Farmers Market of the season, and, as you know if you've been following the hullabaloo, perhaps ever. So, one more time: shake the loose bits of dried parsley out of the bottom of your cloth sack, tuck that broke-spine old copy of the The Moosewood Cookbook under your arm and head on up to the Wallingford Center Wednesday from 3 - 7 pm. Chef Dustin Ronspies…

Sensory Garden

Your typical garden is designed for one, maybe two senses: flower gardens are beautiful to look at and, if you're lucky, add a bit of sweetness to the air. A vegetable garden may be focused entirely on taste, a lumpy bit of tumbling ugliness, rooted in practicality on its way to your table. How would you design a garden if you were thinking about your senses at once? Bright colors and subtle shadings, fierce and delicate smells, lavender and mint and…
