Mad Lib Forums!

Surely you remember Mad Libs? You know, someone would read a sentence, you’d fill in the blank and before you knew it – you had a story! Well – if you spend ANY time at all on the Wallyhood Forums (and if you don’t, you should), you’ll know that between the posts, and the names of those posting – this is a classic case of the truth being better than fiction! Why, just this week we had these words popping up…

Go Out Front

We met a new neighbor this weekend, Benton. "New" in the sense of "new to us", not in the sense of "new to the neighborhood": either one of us could have put a rock through the other's window from our respective front porches for over ten years. (It is a testament to the cordiality of the neighborhood that it has never occurred to either of us to do so, despite our proximity.) Earlier last week, we met another neighbor, six houses…

Our long, dry year is almost over. On March 21, 2009, the Wallingford liquor store rolled the last case of hooch out the front door and turned the keys over to Archie McPhee. Four hundred and thirty-three days later, on Friday, May 28, 2010, the store is scheduled to re-open in the shell vacated by Hollywood Video, at 118 N.E. 45th St just across from Dick's. The Seattle International Film Festival kicked off this past week and continues through June 13th and, while none of the films are showing here in Wallingford, we got our grubby hands on a passel of free tickets to give away, so here we are. We've got a bunch of ideas on how to give them away, clever contests and puzzles, but we thought we'd just start off simple. We're going to give away a two pairs of SIFF tickets to two…

Graffiti: The Last Word

Thanks to the many people who left comments on our post Wallyhood Endorses Vandalism this past Saturday. Hearing your points of view helped us clarify our own thinking. Jonah, this constitutes our "official response" (and the last we'll post on this for some time, we promise): We stand by our original position that while "tagging"-type graffiti is nasty and should be a punished crime, the artfully altered signs by Bagley and 39th were not nasty and should have been left for…

Hamilton Construction Update

This month’s Hamilton Construction Update is brought to you in part by the word “accoutrement”, as in: the construction workers at Hamilton are putting in plants, light fixtures and other accoutrement on school grounds. This to me signals the beginning of the end; the light at the end of the tunnel. Hallelujah! Over the last few days it’s been interesting to watch the installation of plants, trees, and beautiful wrought iron fencing around the perimeter of the school.  My only comment…

Sock Hop

Sock Monster, the new alt-hosiery shop that slots in between Not a Number Gifts and Teahouse Kuan Yin at 1909 N. 45th St opens today with an all-day party until 9 pm. Holly Gummelt tells us she's got a couple of DJ's lined up for the day, some food and drink, pinball (Addams Family), hoops and, of course, crap tons of socks. Party in my shoes!
