Sign Defaced!

Attention, City of Seattle, Department of Tearing Down Defaced Signs! A sign, in Wallingford, has been defaced. Observe this photographic evidence, snapped covertly by cameraphone and smuggled out of the neighborhood onto the Internets by means of telecommunication waves: This sign was meant to protect people, and now it has become whimsical! It belongs to the city, but now a rogue artist has unlawfully altered it! Quick, rush your crack team of sign dismantlers to the intersection in Wallingford on which…

New Wallingford Landmark Coming

Or, perhaps we should say, BETTER landmark coming. Anyone who's come up 45th St from I-5 is familiar with the mini-festering pit on the corner of 4th Ave NE and NE 45th St. There used to be a hair salon or somesuch there, then developers knocked the building down to build condos, then the economy got knocked down, and the empty lot lay collecting garbage. Together with the drab Cosmopolitan Apartments (and formerly Office Max) building, the seedy mini-market on the…

Park Your Bike on a Big Fish

Translation: you can now park your bike on a large fish-shaped bike rack in the lower hood. This fabulous, car-sized, rack was installed at 10am yesterday down at the corner of Woodlawn and 34th, right in front of the Essential Baking Company. It was quick and easy; it only required three workers, a few traffic cones, and takes up but one car space. One car spot for 14 bike slots seems like a healthy trade. The installation was complete before noon…

Tonight (Thursday, June 10th), they're holding a talent show fundraiser from 5:30 - 8:30 pm and it sounds like they've got a great line-up. Rachel Duboff writes: The master of ceremonies for this event is Spark Interaction's ever-fun improv master Leif Hansen. The local artists who will perform include critically-acclaimed…

Back in January, we noted that the 45th Street Viaduct (that huge bridge that takes 45th Street from the U District into University Village) would be closing temporarily for repairs in late Spring. Thanks to Bill for reminding us that it is now officially Late Spring, and as of this coming Monday, the duct is done. From the press release: SDOT is closing the NE 45th Street Viaduct on Monday, June 14 to replace the aging west approach (the raised roadway…

Buh-bye, Babalu?

It was way back in March, 2009 that we first noted the ongoing problems Babalu has been having with the liquor control board (What did you do, Babalu?). You may remember that they ran afoul of the WSLCB by violating the spirit, if not the letter of the law requiring food be served alongside alcohol by serving $99 TV dinners. It seems Johnny Law has finally caught up with the star-crossed Mambo Room. The SeattleCrime blog reports that WLSCB records state…
