The ballots for the Seattle 2.0 awards, the local tech start-ups' self-congratulatory but nonetheless respectable (and fun) version of the Oscars are open, and, in the "Best Start-Up Designer" category, we have a Wallingford vs. Wallingford showdown: Matt Lerner is the CTO of Front Seat, makers of Walkscore and City-Go-Round. Front Seat is a "civic software company", specializing in socially progressive services that build communities (in the "real world" sense, not just in the "Facebook" sense). Matt has declined our frequent…

Bon Voyage, Matt!

You may have noticed that some Wallyhood stories are graced with some extra visual pizazz (e.g., A new classic at the Boys and Girls Club, Break Out Your Dancing Shoes, Is That Jazz? Festival). That's the been the work of Wallyhood "staff photographer" (doesn't that sound official?) Matt Mason, of MTM Photography. Well, we're sad to say that Matt's hitting the road. Turns out when he's not snapping photos around the hood or hefting merch over at Buddhaful, he's twisting knobs…

Senior Center Breakfasting Again

After announcing last month that their doors will remain open, the Wallingford Community Senior Center has steadily begun to rebuild. The center has reached 20 percent of their fundraising goal toward an anonymously donated $25,000 Challenge Grant since ramping up efforts in March. Additionally, they’ve welcomed back two former programs and are gearing up to host a community-wide pancake breakfast later this month. Kathleen Cromp of the Senior Center tells us that they have reached about $5,000 in donations so far…

He is a one-man show, and that is nothing short of amazing. The life…

Operation Beautify Report

Sounds like Operation Beautify Wallingford was a success. Kara Ceriello, the president of the Wallingford Chamber of Commerce said over 45 people showed up (including a contingent of 25 kids from the Wallingford Boys and Girls Club), Cafe Appasionnato provided the fuel, Fainting Goat provided free scoops for the kids and half price scoops for the adults, and Councilman Mike O'Brien shmoozed with the throngs. Kara forwarded on these pictures of the action.

When it comes to compost, we’re the compostiest!

Since the food waste program began last March, Seattle residents have increased recycling food scraps by a whopping 47%.  According to Seattle Public Utilities, this puts Seattle's recycling food waste at "approximately 10 times the national average"! To reward us for our fine efforts, Seattle Public Utilities (SPU), in partnership with Cedar Grove Composting, has launched "Compost Days".  Starting today, though May 30, Seattle residents can get two free bags of Cedar Grove compost, and free Green Kitchen Kits.
