Giving Tuesday is an annual celebration of our non-profit service organizations and a time to encourage you to donate to support them. Giving Tuesday is a great day to spend a few minutes getting your annual giving done. Eight organizations active in…

Art Show at Good Shepherd

Just in time for the holidays: the Good Shepherd Center Artists Open Studios and Sale features six artists showing—and selling!—their work. The 5th floor walk-up at Good Shepherd (with an amazing view) will be open 12 - 3pm on all Saturdays through December 17th—except Saturday, November 26th (the building will be closed during Thanksgiving weekend). I received a postcard in the mail recently announcing that the 2023 Kiddie Parade (a Seafair event which, due to the pandemic, has not been held since 2019) would take place on July 15. Surprised that this announcement would be sent out in October, 2022, I turned the card over to discover that it was, in essence, a call for help. The parade is being organized by Celebrate Wallingford, a new neighborhood non-profit set up specifically to produce the parade. I…

It has been 25 years since University House Wallingford was built on Stone Way N, just south of N 45th (4400 Stone Way N).  It is an independent and assisted living facility where seniors have apartments and can take their meals in a dining hall. It is a part of the ERA Living chain and is associated with the UW Retirement Association. It has been a real asset to the community, hosting events open to the public in a large assembly…

Tall stalks are cut back after harvest and new plants will sprout from the base

To “choke” or not to “choke”? That is the question….

And the answer is ArtiCHOKEs or SunCHOKEs (also known as Jerusalem artichokes). I have been cleaning out the spent annual vegetable crops this week, which made me think about those vegetables that come back year after year (perennials) and are mixed into the garden landscape. Plant once - harvest for many years! Globe Artichokes Artichokes are hearty plants that grow up to 6 feet in height. They have silvery green leaves and produce a tall stalk which flowers into the heads…

Update on I-5 Encampment in Wallingford

This is a lengthy article, but we are discussing a complex topic that does not lend itself to brief descriptions. Please bear with me! Wallingford has experienced its share of homeless encampments and more organized communities of people without permanent shelter. For a long time, a row of RVs in varying states of functionality and decay lined Northlake Way, east of Gasworks Park. The Tiny Home Village known as Nickelsville has quietly existed across from Ivar’s Salmon House for years. Like…
