Free and Cheap Eats Day

Let's take the freebie tour of Wallingford, shall we? We'll start with a free pastry at Starbucks (before 10:30 am, print the coupon or show the barista a copy on your mobile phone). Timed, perhaps, to coincide with the Starbuck's annual shareholder's meeting Wednesday? A fine breakfast, but now it's time for some lunch. How about Ivar's? Perfect, because they're celebrating the 105th birthday of their "flounder", Ivar Haglund. Buy one entree, say "Happy Birthday, Ivar" and you'll get a second…

Dim Sum

Back in December, we reported that the old Home Realty spot by 49th and Stone Way was being remodeled by the owners of House of Hong, the famed dim sum restaurant in the International District, and would become Bamboo Village. The My Wallingford blog has followed up with a call to the owners to get some more info: Lee told us that the restaurant, called Bamboo Village, will open in late May or early June and will serve dim sum all…

Pour House Opens Tonight

(This post originally appeared on My Green Lake, who totally scooped us) After Tangletown’s beloved Luau Polynesian Lounge (2253 North 56th St) closed its doors on January 26, rumor had it that it was to be replaced by a cocktail lounge. Excitement grew once word got out that Pour House, a bar and dining spot billed as “upscale casual without the pretension” was coming soon to the corner of N 56th St and Kirkwood Pl N. Tonight (Tuesday, March 16, 2010),…

Irwin’s – Wallingford’s Economic Engine of Tasty Goodness

Irwin’s was a life saver when my wife and I first moved to Wallingford last summer. It’s not too far from our house –and anyone that’s moved knows that a good cup of coffee and something (like a delicious baked good) to get the muscles moving are important ingredients in getting settled in a new house and neighborhood. On top of that – I work from home – and I NEEDED internet access right away. I was the shabbily dressed guy…

Freddy Rivas, the owner responded: We did have an incident that will need some exterior repair work done, most likely off site.  It was the result of a design oversight by the builders.  Luckily there was no damage to the interior of the unit and it should be a relatively simple fix.  We're going to need to replace the extractor fan.  In the meantime we…

New Life at the Jitterbug?

Lots of folks have noticed that there's been some activity at the old Loki Cafe / Jitterbug / Beeliner Diner space (2114 N 45th Street): new windows going on, clean-up. Could this mean a new restaurant in our midst? Unfortunately, we have nothing to report. Margaret tried calling Chow Foods, who own the lease, and they wouldn't comment. Previously, they've said that the spot will be used as a "test kitchen and office", which makes little sense to us, given its…
