Satay Birthday Give-away

SATAY Malaysian Street Food (1711 N. 45th Street)  is celebrating its second anniversary this Sunday, December 9, and as a "thank you" to the community, they're giving a little something away in exchange for a small donation to Mercy Corps. Owner Peter Ringold gave us the scoop: Over the past two years we have been fortunate to have received tremendous support from the Wallingford community. We'd like to thank everyone for their support and invite them to come to Satay this Sunday, December 9th to celebrate…

Now open: Yoroshiku

Yoroshiku, the new Japanese restaurant in the old Joule space (1913 N. 45th St.) is now open, and Wallingford resident Ann Ishimaru went there on Sunday night and wrote to tell us all about it. Full disclosure, the owners of Yoroshiku are Ann's downstairs neighbors. But Ann gets major street cred for being a 4th generation Japanese American whose been to Japan several times; Plus, her daughter is in the Japanese language program at John Stanford International, and she's eaten A LOT…

The Whale Wins

Stone Way has been a busy corridor this past week, with Eltana Bagels opening at the Prescott Wallingford complex and Joule (re)opening at The Fremont Collective. Chef Renee Erikson (The Walrus and Carpenter) has also opened her newest restaurant, The Whale Wins, in The Fremont Collective (3506 Stone Way North). The menu features food with influences from southern Europe and northern Africa, with an emphasis on wood-fired vegetables like oven roasted tomatoes, radicchio, or cauliflower.  Whole roasted trout, clams, chicken, or beef are…

Joule (Re)opens tonight

Joule is set to open its doors for dinner tonight in its new location at The Fremont Collective on Stone Way at N. 35th St. (3506 Stone Way N.) You may remember when the restaurant ditched us left its former location on N. 45th Street back in April for bigger digs and outdoor seating. Joule will be the first of the three occupants to open at Fremont Collective. Sport gear shop, evo, and Renee Erikson's new restaurant, The Whale Wins will also…

La Casa Azul is Closed

Laura writes: My family walked up the street on Friday night hoping to get some great Mexican food at Casa Azul, only to be met with a darkened building and locked doors! Are they leaving? Kaput? What's the deal? Do you know or can you find out? I'm feeling very sad. They serve really delicious food - much better than the cheese fest that was there before them... Thanks! Wallyhood res. I also noticed the darkened space and yesterday, I saw…

‘Yoroshiku’ coming to former ‘Joule’ space

Wallingford neighbor, Reeve Baily, spotted some activity in the former 'Joule' space on N. 45th on Friday evening. Here's what Reeve discovered: Lights on, door open, tools grinding...something was going on at the former 'Joule' space tonight. I popped my head in and met 'K' one of the partners of the new venture. 'It's going to be Japanese...but not Sushi,' he said. 'Think Yakitori...' he added with a grin. (I feel like I heard the exact same thing regarding the new place taking over the…

Diplomatic plates

Congratulations goes to Maria Hines, owner of Tilth here in Wallingford and the Golden Beetle over in Ballard. Maria was one of over 80 chefs appointed by the U.S. State Department to the newly-created American Chef Corps under the Diplomatic Culinary Partnership with the James Beard Foundation. This means Hines and her peers will create meals for foreign dignitaries or, when necessary, will travel abroad to engage in public diplomacy programs. The announcement was made at the U.S. State Department last Friday,…
