Seattle Schools Transition Plan, 2.0

If you've got kids entering Kindergarten next fall (yes, we early birds really do have to start thinking about enrollment now, can you believe it?) then you might be interested in attending the upcoming meetings regarding the second year of Seattle Public Schools' New Student Assignment Plan.  A meeting for our attendance area (this includes John Stanford, Hamilton, McDonald School, BF Day and Roosevelt High School) will be held on Monday, November 22 at Ingraham High School (1819 N 135 St.),…

The John Stanford International School principal Kelly Aramaki got a surprise this morning. Julie Pellegrino Gilbert of the JSIS PTSA tells the story: John Stanford International School hosted an assembly this morning for Randy Dorn, U.S. Congressman Jim McDermott, State Senator Rosemary McAuliffe, SPS Chief Academic Officer Susan Enfield, and SPS School Board President Michael DeBell among others today. What appeared to be a school visit turned into a surprise award presentation from the Milken Family Foundation [Ed Note: Yep, same…

Paying it forward

The other day, Wallingford neighbor Beth posted something on the Wallingford Moms site that caught my eye:  A group of parents have gotten together to host a fundraiser at Tutta Bella (4411 Stone Way N.) on Thursday, November 4 (from 5:50 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.) for Diane Broderick--a beloved co-op preschool teacher who had been recently diagnosed with breast cancer.  I e-mailed Beth and she provided me with more details: Diane has been teaching preschool co-op for over twenty years and…

You don’t have to think too hard, just decide if you find Paul Krugman or George Will more credible. The exception is the Seattle Public Schools levy, which is scrambling all of the usual alliances. Superintendent Maria…

McDonald School Seeks Walkathon Sponsors

Next Friday (10/22), McDonald School will hold its first annual Walkathon to raise money for extra curricular programs and teaching assistants.  The McDonald School PTA is asking friends and family of McDonald School students, as well as local businesses to help meet their goal of raising $6,000. On Walkathon day, kids in grades K-1 and 2-5 will each walk for an hour and will be cheered on by a special guest--former UW track star Katie Follett, who's currently training for the…

Wallingford schools need AED stewards

Last June, the Seattle Public Schools board voted unanimously to install at least one automatic external defibrillator (AED) in each of the 93 schools all over the city, and to develop an emergency plan that calls for training responders in CPR and the use of an AED.  An AED program in the schools would protect not only the lives of children, but of teachers, administration, and any other adults who are on site at the school. Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) can…
