Sagrada Seattle

As regular readers know, we spent most of last week in Barcelona, Spain. Before you get too jealous, it was a business trip, so we had little time for much beyond the conference we came to attend. That, plus we've spent several weeks in Barcelona previously and have ceased to really enjoy it. While the architecture is stunning, the labyrinthine Barri Gòtic has been largely overrun by chain stores (albeit Spanish chain stores), mediocre restaurants and touristic chocolate shops, transforming the…

WCSC: Donors Interested; Still Needs Effective Business Model

About 25 people attended last night's Wallingford Community Council meeting at the Good Shepherd Center, including Wallingford Community Senior Center and WCC Board members, Senior Center members and local residents. The first hour of the meeting centered around a discussion of the WCSC's future, which addressed potential donors who have recently stepped forward and the necessity for a stronger and better-equipped Board to help draw up a sustainable business model. Community Invited to Participate in WCC Meeting Tonight

While they originally planned to make a decision by Thanksgiving, the Wallingford Senior Center is still on the fence about whether or not they'll remain open. Early word is that the Senior Center fundraiser held Thursday night raised over $10,000 to help pay off back-rent and back-pay, a great demonstration of the will of the community to keep the center open. If you haven't yet, read Erin's beautifully written write-up on the event for all the details. And don't forget, we're holding a fundraiser auction for the Senior Center here on Wallyhood, as well. 100% of proceeds will go towards keeping the Senior Center open (or, if…

Extraordinary Turnout for Senior Center’s Fundraising Effort

Three weeks into the closure of the Wallingford Senior Center, save for a few programs and one remaining staff member, the now ghost town of a building exploded with bluegrass music and the energized voices of well over 100 people last night. In attendance were staff members, the Center's Board of Directors, members from the Chamber of Commerce and the Wallingford Community Council, local seniors, families and notable local politicians: 2009 mayoral candidate, Joe Mallahan and city councilmember, Tom Rasmussen. Photos…

Reminder: Senior Center Gala tonight

Tonight, Thursday the 19th, is the "Brother Can you Spare A Dime (or More)?" soup line fundraiser for the Wallingford Senior Center. We just saw the list of donations, and it should really be called "A Taste of Wallingford": Joule's special iced tea, Chutney's fruity drink soft drinks, beer from Fremont Brewing Co, coffee from Starbucks, soups from Selena's Guadalajara, Ivar's, and the Rusty Pelican, wine from City Cellars, breads from Essential Baking, cookies from Fainting Goat, donuts from Mighty O…
