Cool Dad Offers Talks About Warm Planet

You might have missed Seattle Public Utilities’ recent Sea Level Rise Map, which predicts routine flooding throughout parts of Seattle by 2050. But Mike Foster – lower Wallingford resident – sure didn’t. And even though Wallingford looks to be spared from regular floods (thanks Ballard Locks!), Mike is on a mission to help his neighbors get serious about stopping climate change. “I’ve been working on my personal carbon footprint for 20+ years,” Mike told me. “But that’s not enough anymore. Quietly driving…

Wallingford – Leading the City in Veg Consumption

Are you an observer of Meatless Monday, a flexitarian, or otherwise reducing your meat consumption? If so, you apparently are not alone! Seattle Times news librarian Gene Balk recently analyzed Seattle’s consumer spending habits and the availability of meat-free cuisine by neighborhood, determining that Wallingford ranks first in the city for its love of veggies. Yep. We eat our five daily servings here in the 'hood, out-munching runners-up Fremont, Ballard, Greenlake and Queen Anne. A stroll along 45th Street with vegetarian main…

Kitaro Update

We'd like to thank Reeve Baily for providing us with the following update on Kitaro, (1624 N. 45th St.) which had been destroyed by a fire on the night of December 7, 2011: Last week my wife and I were standing in line at Molly Moon's when the communal chatter came to the subject of the sadly crumbling Kitaro Sushi/Bento. "I heard that grumpy dude took the insurance money and moved to Belize," said one fellow. "No, no, no, the owners…

Chabela’s Opens Softly

On a tip from the sputtering tail end of the comment stream (river?) from our Ch-ch-ch-abel's post, we wandered by the newly opened Chabela's restaurant on 45th Tuesday night and had a chat with the manager, Peter Diaz, who, along with the chef, have a small stake in the restaurant alongside the owner, Andres Lopez. They "soft opened" earlier this week and plan to have their "hard opening" two weeks from Sunday, on March 3rd. What's the difference? Well, advertising won't start…

Community Greenhouse Seeks Seedling Nurturers

If you’ve got the itch to get your hands in the dirt, the Wallingford greenhouse, aka “A Growing Community,” could use your help! You might remember that last summer, we featured Wallingford resident Cyrus Appell, who has donated the use of his backyard greenhouse to the greater good for the past five years. Thanks to the time donated by dozens of volunteers, thousands of seedlings have been distributed to giving gardens throughout Seattle. At harvest time, the fruits (and veggies) of…

Personal safety reminder

On Monday morning, at approximately 6:30 a.m., a female jogger was attacked by a man while she was running around Green Lake. Also from the Blotter, "The suspect was described as a…

State of Kate’s Pub Union

Tomorrow, President Obama will address the nation in his first State of the Union since the 2012 elections. He's expected to outline his agenda for economy and job creation, hopefully with at least a hat tip to climate change. He may also discuss the exit strategy for the Afghanistan war. If all this political talk tickles your wonk bone, then join the 43rd District Democrats for a viewing at Kate's Pub (309 NE 45th St) from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm.…
