Wallingford Playfield play area closed for one week

Last night as I was walking the dogs through Wallingford Playfield, I noticed a chain link fence around the perimeter of the play area. It was too dark to snap any pictures, so I emailed Dewey Potter, the Communications Manager at Seattle Parks and Rec and asked her what was up. She replied: Hi Margaret— Our crew is repairing the pathways inside the play area, and they are posting signs today that explain that. Reader Kimberly went to the Playfield this…

Fall Planting

It’s not too late to plant! The ground is still warm from what little summer we’ve had, and now that the rains are moving in, it’s a nice time for seeds to germinate and roots to develop. Even though it may not look like much is going on above ground, fall-planted perennials will put on a lot of root growth, from fall till late winter, while the demand from leaves and flowers is low. A big root system gives plants a…

As Amazon and Apple battle it out for world movie domination in the wake of Blockbuster and Hollywood Video's collapse, and Netflix / Qwikster stumbles it's way into the next era, it's nice to remember that there are still independently-owned video stores run by human beings that really, really like movies. Our sponsor, Scarecrow Video (5030 Roosevelt Way NE), is one such shop and this Saturday, October 15th, along with independent video stores across the country, they'll be celebrating Independent Video Store…

Get to know your traffic circle

Walking home Saturday I met my neighbor, Deborah Niedermeyer, who was tending our traffic circle. I realized I don't know anything about the traffic circle, other than that the kids squeal when we bike around it an extra time. I'm sure each traffic circle in Wallingford has a very interesting history, but here's the story of my favorite one at 2nd Ave NE & NE 43rd St: in 1992, Deborah took pictures to document fender benders (before the days of digital…

Tattoo You

It looks like the "what's up with that lame 45th Express Mart?" question has finally been resolved. Reader Paul B. noted that the tattoo parlor, Slave to the Needle has expanded into the the space. The new layout is pretty classy, too, with warm wood floors, a classy chandelier and a wall just about covered in awards. We stopped in the other night to chat with the manager, Dave Potter about the expansion: Wallyhood: Looks like you just about doubled your space. How'd…
