Rubber Chickens

This Friday, April 1st is just another day for some; but for others, it's April Fools Day.  For Archie McPhee, Friday marks The Great Rubber Chicken Giveaway.  That's right folks, the first 100 people who come in to Archie McPhee this Friday will get their very own rubber chicken.  I happen to think this giveaway is highly appropriate for Wallingford since we're friends of the fowl, and so I hereby proclaim that our neighborhood mascot is the chicken, be it rubber…

Growing “Your Farm in the City”

Imagine acquiring the power to produce your own food.  Boom! Veggies over here.  Bam! Herbs over there.  Wham! Strawberries!  Zap! Fresh-laid eggs, coming right up! Most city-livers are so distant from the sources of what they eat that this seems like magic.  But in her new book Your Farm in the City, Lisa Taylor of Seattle Tilth explains that starting an urban farm is no mystery, but rather something deeply satisfying that we can all do.  Meet Lisa, learn about the…

Wallingford: ‘Crunchy–But in a good way’

Wallingford has been dubbed as one of "The 20 Best Places to Live Now" according to the April issue of Seattle Met. In an interview with Wallyhood's Jordan Schwartz, Seattle Met's Matthew Halverson provides a perspective on our neighborhood's "crunchiness": When Jordan Schwartz moved to Wallingford from the East Coast in 1993, he found a neighborhood overrun by felines. 'You couldn’t walk down the street without seeing cats,' he says. 'They were all over.' Nearly 20 years later, he still feels…

Earth Hour tonight

Tonight at 8:30pm local time, the Space Needle will go dark along with many businesses and homes across Seattle.  And the entire globe.  Because it’s Earth Hour! There's no need to fret when the city goes dark tonight as  people shut off non-essential lights.  The dark won't be cause by tsunami or earthquake or oil spill or wind storm or flood or even nuclear fallout.  No, the Earth Hour movement is a call to action on climate change, supported by the…

Woodlawn Santa Update II

Back in November, Wallyhood told you that Woodlawn Santa (aka Sharon Ehrig) was diagnosed with breast cancer and would be unable to maintain her winter wonderland over the holidays. Today, an update.  And a happy one at that! Surgery was a success, and Santa has completed all rounds of radiation. She is - and I quote - "99.9% better!"   She'd be 100% better if she weren't still so tired, but otherwise she's doing great.  She'll have a mammogram in late April…
