Holiday Traditions

I'm not a sucker for much, but holiday traditions really get me.  They are the one time of year when people everywhere, across various cultures and at varied times across the globe, people everywhere are trying to do something PLEASANT. Christmas lights, a succulent ham, shiny garland snaked around a colorful tree, winter solstice feasts, pine boughs made into homemade wreaths.  Long holiday office lunches, and frosted cookies that taste better than they look.  The Figgy Pudding Street Corner Caroling Event,…

‘Twas the night before Christmas

Reader Jenny sent us this photo last week with the following note: Thought you might enjoy seeing this piece of holiday silliness in S. Wallingford (N 36th between Burke and Meridian).  I thought of doing "Deer Decisions" many years ago, but could never bring myself to buy one of those tacky animated deer.  Well, this year for my birthday my husband guessed and fulfilled my secret wish.  True love!  If you stand and watch, the deer turns it head from side…

Sidewalk Power Plate Safety

As reported in the Seattle Times, on Thanksgiving Queen Anne's Lisa McKibbin lost her beloved dog Sammy as a result of "contact voltage" when a streetlight emitted an unsafe level of electrical voltage.  You can read the entire story here. Last week, the Seattle PI's Vanessa Ho reported that the sixth dangerous electrical cover was found at 85th & Greenwood, not so far from Wallingford.  Now we hear that City Light will inspect all 20,000 light poles & 10,000 covers next…

Christmas Ships

Did you hear the singers on the Christmas Ship last night on Lake Union?  We did, and we live halfway on top of the hill!  It's always a little (disconcerting?) hearing the voices at first, because we immediately think one of our kids got up out of bed and turned on the TV; and we freeze, trying to determine which of them will be busted until my husband asks, "Wait a minute, is that the Christmas Ship?" and I say, "Oh…

Coffee and other necessities (what’s open, what’s not)

It never fails in my house on Christmas Day -- either I'll need some random ingredient for dinner, or we'll be out of "x" (dog food, milk, or heaven forbid--wine) and my poor husband will be sent out on a quest in the middle of the day.  So, to make my life (and hopefully yours) easier, here's a list of stores and whatnot that will be open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, including the most important among life essentials:  coffee…

Mail Safety

Wallyhood tipster Erin wrote to let us know about some mail theft in the neighborhood.  While she didn't specify the exact location (I imagine she's not in the mood to advertise her address!), we'd all be better off thinking about mail safety, particularly this week.  Here's Erin's note: Hello, Just wanted to give my fellow Wallingford neighbors a heads up about mail theft. I came home last night to find a box ripped open on our front porch, and the contents…

Holiday eats in Wallingford (what’s open, what’s not)

A post in the Wallyhood Forums from reader Scarebaby prompted us to do some call-downs and find out which restaurants in Wallingford will be open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (don't worry, we'll do the same for New Years!).  Some restaurants open on Christmas Eve may have shorter hours, so you may wanna check out those we've listed below.  If you choose something more than a quick casual spot, reservations are highly recommended.  Here's the scoop: Open Christmas Eve Julia's…
