Ramblin’ in the Rain II

Put out for free, or just a good place to hang out? Big bald eagle guards big pile of boxes. A teeny garden gnome rock band! This is usually a spectacular view. Crossing Pacific St. to the Burke-Gilman Trail is frightening and nearly impossible. Pity the poor tourists who booked to Ride the Ducks on a day like today.

McDonald School Seeks Walkathon Sponsors

Next Friday (10/22), McDonald School will hold its first annual Walkathon to raise money for extra curricular programs and teaching assistants.  The McDonald School PTA is asking friends and family of McDonald School students, as well as local businesses to help meet their goal of raising $6,000. On Walkathon day, kids in grades K-1 and 2-5 will each walk for an hour and will be cheered on by a special guest--former UW track star Katie Follett, who's currently training for the…

Ramblin’ in the Rain I

This does raise the question of what they have to hide. Headlights left on.  A very common problem in this weather. Those snap-together collars never stay on well. A dry place to sleep in the deluge.  Is this the one who's given the collar the slip? So sweet.  The sign says:  "Daddy's Garden.  No birds allowed." Free firewood.  Must have chainsaw. At 4oth Street and Bagley Ave., as I stand waving my bright orange crossing flag, 4 cars zoom past me. …

Wherefore art thou, Fifi?

Wallyreader Jessica wrote us on Thursday night to tell us that her dog was stolen--right off her front porch! O.k., she’s not a real dog, but she’s a slightly larger than life-sized ceramic boxer who’s been sitting on my porch since 2003.  Someone made off with her a few months back, but dropped her a couple blocks away, and some friends of Molly Moon brought her back to me.  This afternoon, I noticed she was gone. If you see Fifi, drop…

Nancy Leson: Maria Hines to open new restaurant

On Friday, Seattle Times food writer Nancy Leson reported that Tilth owner and chef Maria Hines plans to open a second restaurant in North Seattle: The chef envisions the new place, dubbed Golden Beetle (named for one of the classic components of the spice-blend ras el hanout, and considered an aphrodisiac), as an 'upbeat, fast-paced' gastropub with an Eastern Mediterranean focus and a North African accent. 'The flavors are going to be big,' she insists. 'Hot-spice, earth-spice, salty, crunchy, sweet, sour.'…

Tennis anyone?

Two years ago, when the tennis courts at nearby Woodland Park were resurfaced, I was green with envy.  Seeing those bright blue rectangular boxes outlined in brilliant white made me wish our tennis courts at the Wallingford Playfield would get an upgrade, too. Well, if you’ve recently been to the Wallingford Playfield, you’ll know my wish came true.  Our two little courts have been repainted.  And they look mah-velous! But wait!  Before you get too excited in thinking that our courts…

The Giving Campaign and Wallingford

October is Giving Campaign month, a time when Microsoft and other large companies encourage employees to pony up for nonprofits by providing for matching funds and automatic payroll deductions. You may struggle with this decision- you know there’s lots more worthwhile things to blow cash on than the old materialism treadmill, but unlike when you buy stuff it's hard to assess if the money is getting the job done. How do you know if a good sounding organization follows through? What…
