Mutt Mitts!

For those who read my previous "Notes From the Playground" posts, you might remember the story of a toddler's poop-smeared ride down the slide that got a discussion going about needing a Mutt Mitt dispenser at Wallingford Park. Well, the mitts are in, or at least the dispenser is. You can find it at Northwest corner of the park, at 43rd and Woodlawn. But perhaps more frequent refills are in need? I've checked the dispenser a few times over the past couple of weeks…

Neighboring ‘Hoods Roundup

Wondering about the goings-on outside of Wallingford last week? Here's a roundup of some of the highlights from our neighbor blogs: Middle schooler speaks out against violence, YouTube-style: If you haven't already, check out this 7th grader's wonderfully creative video, which features random passersby around Green Lake and criticizes violent protests that have erupted in light of the recent health care reform. We really can learn from the children! "$1,500 reward for lost E. Union pit bull puppy leads to armed…

Bon Voyage, Matt!

You may have noticed that some Wallyhood stories are graced with some extra visual pizazz (e.g., A new classic at the Boys and Girls Club, Break Out Your Dancing Shoes, Is That Jazz? Festival). That's the been the work of Wallyhood "staff photographer" (doesn't that sound official?) Matt Mason, of MTM Photography. Well, we're sad to say that Matt's hitting the road. Turns out when he's not snapping photos around the hood or hefting merch over at Buddhaful, he's twisting knobs…

Senior Center Breakfasting Again

After announcing last month that their doors will remain open, the Wallingford Community Senior Center has steadily begun to rebuild. The center has reached 20 percent of their fundraising goal toward an anonymously donated $25,000 Challenge Grant since ramping up efforts in March. Additionally, they’ve welcomed back two former programs and are gearing up to host a community-wide pancake breakfast later this month. Kathleen Cromp of the Senior Center tells us that they have reached about $5,000 in donations so far…

La Boulangerie: A Tale of a Great Baker

For years, I have enjoyed the smell and sight of La Boulangerie on the corner of N. 45th and Bagley, known for its assortment of fresh baked French breads decoratively lining the shelves. The cases are filled with fresh croissants and pastries that serve to tempt the public. Xon Loung (pronounced Song Loong) is the master behind it all, and when I say master, I mean it. He is a one-man show, and that is nothing short of amazing. The life…

Operation Beautify Report

Sounds like Operation Beautify Wallingford was a success. Kara Ceriello, the president of the Wallingford Chamber of Commerce said over 45 people showed up (including a contingent of 25 kids from the Wallingford Boys and Girls Club), Cafe Appasionnato provided the fuel, Fainting Goat provided free scoops for the kids and half price scoops for the adults, and Councilman Mike O'Brien shmoozed with the throngs. Kara forwarded on these pictures of the action.
