Pequena No More

A few weeks back we reported on the travails of Seamonster and its resident restaurant, Pequena Havana. Kristi just wrote in with an update: Hubby and I have been wanting to try the Cuban restaurant at SeaMonster, so we decided to go there for dinner tonight. When we got there (about 6:30), the door was wide open and the TV was on, but it was very dark, not a single person was around and we saw nothing even remotely resembling a restaurant --…

Greenwood Garage Sale Day

Sure, sure, we'll have our weekly garage sale / open house map of Wallingford / Green Lake later today, but honestly, it just won't compare to what's going on up on Phinney Ridge / Greenwood, where they're having their annual garage sale day. If this year is like past, there will be around 150 sales sprinkled throughout the neighborhood, plus a tool swap and a few flea markets for good measure. You can download and print the map in advance, or…

Joyería

One of our private giggles when traveling to Spanish speaking countries is spotting the joyerías. It looks like there are all these shops selling joy. What a great idea! Actually, they're selling jewelry, which is also a pretty good idea. And this weekend, you don't have to stray much more than a half of a block from the famous Rancho Brava taco truck to find a great, impromptu joyeria. Silversmith Sacha Nanay has been visiting Wallingford from Taxco, Guerrerro, Mexico (a…

It was really hot in Seattle in July so I painted windmills and icebergs to cool off Mosaic. I lived in Sweden for a year in 2006-2007 and traveled around northern Europe studying sustainable city planning. Most of the windmills you see are…

Wallingford Waterways

Back in February, we noted that there were efforts afoot to extend the excellent Center for Wooden Boats to the north shore of Lake Union (aka Wallingford). We played a bit of phone tag with the director and gradually dropped the thread of the story. Better late than never, we bring you good news of progress. The Friends of Northlake Wharf have been diligently planning, pleading and visioning to create a new public space that would include the CWB on Waterway…

Kites!

DOUG. tipped us off to an event going on until 8 pm tonight at Gas Works Park. From Seattle Magazine: If passing through Gas Works Park isn’t part of your normal Wednesday routine, you may want to make it so this Wednesday, 9/9. Master Kite Flyer Seth Abramson will be flying 121 elegant white kites over the park. More art installation than childhood whim, Abramson and his piece of performance art will be sure to leave you breathless.
