Watch Out: free-range kids with recording equipment

Matt Mason January 28, 2010 Comments are off

A dozen kids and a pile of electronics took over the Great Hall at the Fremont Abby this past Saturday for a Field Recording Workshop. The workshop was hosted by the Fremont Abby and run by Wallingford’s Hollow Earth Radio.

Five staff members from Hollow Earth started by helping the kids, ages 8-13, to discover and understand what field recording is and why it is important. For those of you over the age of 13 who don’t know what field recording is, I’ll tell you what I learned.

Field Recording is the capturing of sounds in their natural environment. It …

Wallymom

I’ve been writing the series “Notes from the Playground” about Wallingford Playfield, but since it’s winter and our park excursions have reduced considerably, I thought I’d broaden my scope a bit with a new series about parenting called Wallymom.

There are all these sayings about parenthood. How being a parent is the best job in the world, the hardest job, the most rewarding, the most enriching, that it’s a gift, etc. Four years and two kids into this journey, I’m finding that it’s all those things. And more.

It prompts this strange mix of thought from philosophical musings about the …

Wallingford Farmers Market in doubt?

Jordan January 28, 2010 17 Comments

We just read in the Wallingford eNewsletter (put out by the Wallingford Neighborhood Office) that the Wallingford Farmers Market won’t be returning to Wallingford Center this coming year. A new location in Wallingford is being discussed, apparently (Good Shepherd Center)?

They’re also discussing changing the day of the week from Wednesday (Saturday?)…

Flipping Intrigue

Jordan January 27, 2010 6 Comments

The story of the flipped SUV we reported on last night just got more interesting. David wrote us with his first hand report:

I was about half a block away walking up Wallingford Ave when the wreck happened. Three guys in the Explorer were crossing Eastbound from a stop sign. They zipped out right in front of a Mazda who slammed on the brakes but still broadsided them and they flipped. When I got there they were crawling out the side windows and a lot of smoke was coming from the truck. They were saying stuff like “Who hit us? …

21 and Gay!

Jordan January 27, 2010 2 Comments

Ah to be 21 again. 21 and gay.

Yep, it was twenty-one years ago, January 31st, 1989, that Changes Bar and Grill (née The Rat Hole, the city felt that name sullied the neighborhood and forced a change) opened its arms and its doors. They’ll be celebrating this fabulous birthday this weekend:

Friday. Happy Hour all day and all night, $.75 Draft Beers (1989 Prices) Prime Rib Dinner $11.75 Saturday. Happy Hour all day and all night,$.75 Draft Beers (1989 Prices) Free pool, Free Darts and Free Video Touch Screens, 2 tacos for $2. Sunday. Happy Hour all day…

Wait Your Turn, Even If You’re Dave Matthews

Erin Leach-Kemon January 27, 2010 3 Comments

This is not fast-food hair. It’s not exactly “your grandfather’s barbershop,” either. Spin’s Barber Shop (4501 Interlake Ave N) primarily works on an appointment basis; men, women and youth make up its customer base; cuts last 30 minutes; and, 90 percent of storeowner Spin’s customers are regulars—some for the past 20 years.

And, Spin’s in his late 30s—a far cry from the 60-something-year-old you might expect to see running this type of operation.  It makes sense though, if you know his career took off in the eighth grade.

Born and raised in Washington state, Spin (born Spyridon Nicon, but nicknamed …

Take the Wallyhood School Poll

Margaret January 27, 2010 21 Comments

Attendance area boundary changes, new school openings, building remodels, open houses, school tours, levy ballots–it’s dizzying to think of all the changes taking place within Seattle Public Schools–and Wallingford seems to have hit the mother lode.

So while you’ve still got school on the brain, I’m curious to know which schools your children will attend in Fall 2010.  This question goes beyond those entering Kindergarten, so, for example, if your third grader attends B.F. Day or John Stanford this year, and will go there again next year, please select that as your answer in the handy poll below.

I’ve added …
