Varsity Inn: New Mexican Dinner Menu

Chris Witwer April 26, 2010 19 Comments

Last week, lower Wallingford’s own Varsity Inn debuted a new Mexican dinner menu — and I find myself wishing I were a real restaurant reviewer so I could do them justice. Best meal I’ve had in ages.  Succulent meat, fresh grilled vegetables, mature seasonings, a superb tortilla soup… wow.

Here’s a list from the new dinner menu:

Steamed Mediterranean Mussels with homemade chorizo, onions, garlic, jalapenos, herbs An amazing Mole (half chicken with rice & beans) Carnitas Estilo San Luis — slow cooked pork tenderloin with tomatillo jalapeno salsa, rice & beans Carne Asada marinated in cerveza and spices, with…

A Friend-ly Reminder from Friends of McDonald School

Margaret April 26, 2010 Comments are off

Just a reminder to those participating in the Friends of McDonald playground structure project: another meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 27, to make the final selection for playground equipment.  The meeting is free and all are welcome to take part in the decision-making process.  The meeting will take place at Green Lake Elementary, from 7-9 p.m. and refreshments will be served.

If all goes well, Friends will hold a cleanup and installation gathering on June 26-27, and then a celebration of the new and improved playground on July 17, for all to enjoy.

Community Embraces ‘A New Start’ For Senior Center

Margaret April 25, 2010 2 Comments

This morning’s pancake breakfast at the Wallingford Community Senior Center (WCSC), aptly named “A New Start”, was as busy as an I-Hop on National Pancake Day.  By 11:30 a.m., Community Board Member Carol Ballard said the count had peaked to 190 hungry patrons. “We had 166 people before church let out,” she beamed.

Last week, we reported the center had reached 20 percent of their fundraising goal toward an anonymously donated $25,000 Challenge Grant since ramping up efforts in March. While there’s no word yet on the number of funds raised from today’s event, it was clear the Wallingford community …

Crime scene

Jordan April 23, 2010 6 Comments

A reader asks:

What’s going on between 39th and 40th on Sunnyside?  There’s lots of cops, dogs and crime scene tape. They were blocking off 40th and when the cop asked me to turn around, he said “we’re working on something here.”

What’s the neighborhood buzz?…

This slipped off my list! Hamilton Construction Update

Margaret April 23, 2010 Comments are off

Shhh, listen…do you hear that?  That’s the sound of birdsong.  And for the first time in a year and a half, that lovely sound isn’t being drowned out by heavy machinery for 8 hours at a stretch.  To quote one of my most memorable eighth grade reading assignments, it’s “All Quiet on the Western Front.”

That’s because the majority of the construction crew at Hamilton has moved inside the building to complete the finishing work, while only a few workers remain outside to complete the walkways and other concrete work adjacent to the front and rear entrances.   To give you …

Small and Simple Awards Announced

Jordan April 23, 2010 Comments are off

The city announced the recipients of the latest round of the Small and Simple Projects Fund, and several Wallingford projects were on the list:

46th Street Mural Project: This project will build community and improve the cityscape by constructing a lasting mural to brighten this underpass, used by thousands of cars and many pedestrians every day.    It will create a neighborhood identification linking upper Fremont and Wallingford and deter crime and graffiti by partnering with community members and organizations to sponsor and participate in constructing the mural. (More info) Wallingford Community Center: This project will develop a financial…
