4-H Club Coming to Wallingford

Shannon December 27, 2010 2 Comments

Can you think of a better location than Wallingford to become the newest home to a 4-H club?  Well don’t think twice, this Lynnwood-based club is heading our way and is seeking Seattle urban kids, ages 5-18 to become new members, and for adults to enroll as leaders.  Wild ‘n’ Woolies will hold their first club meeting on January 2, from 9am-11am.  If you’re interested, contact Nina Finley for the location: [email protected].

16 year-old Nina gave us the scoop as to how she got involved with 4-H:

When I was nine, I went to the Evergreen State Fair and fell …

Missing a Kitty?

Margaret December 26, 2010 9 Comments

Reader Janine sent us the following note:

This calico cat has been living on our porch at 43rd and Woodlawn for most of the last two weeks. It’s desperate to come inside and be part of our family, but we are unable to accommodate it. The cat appears to be well fed, though we have never fed it. If this is your cat or if you know anything about it, we would appreciate hearing from you at 206 790 7360 or [email protected].

Warm and Bright

Helen December 26, 2010 Comments are off

An old-fashioned ladies knitting circle outside Bad Woman Yard in the Wallingford Center!

In no particular order, they are:  Allie (scarf), Rebecca (scarf), Erin (fabulous hat – her words), Sam (neck cozy), Joanne (hat), Becky (shawl), and Missy (scarf and hat).

They’re the Newbie Knitters and gather here every other Sunday (contact Becky (shawl) at meetup.com to join).  Cozy, eh?

This full-body rain protection makes a lot of sense lately.  Especially given the Wet Floor sign in Bartell’s.  I want a set.

Hello John and …

Holiday Traditions

Chris Witwer December 25, 2010 7 Comments

I’m not a sucker for much, but holiday traditions really get me.  They are the one time of year when people everywhere, across various cultures and at varied times across the globe, people everywhere are trying to do something PLEASANT. Christmas lights, a succulent ham, shiny garland snaked around a colorful tree, winter solstice feasts, pine boughs made into homemade wreaths.  Long holiday office lunches, and frosted cookies that taste better than they look.  The Figgy Pudding Street Corner Caroling Event, the Lenin Lighting, Santarchy.

In the spirit of “I’ll show you mine and you show me yours,” here are …

‘Twas the night before Christmas

Reader Jenny sent us this photo last week with the following note:

Thought you might enjoy seeing this piece of holiday silliness in S. Wallingford (N 36th between Burke and Meridian).  I thought of doing “Deer Decisions” many years ago, but could never bring myself to buy one of those tacky animated deer.  Well, this year for my birthday my husband guessed and fulfilled my secret wish.  True love!  If you stand and watch, the deer turns it head from side to side as though trying to decide between here/there, good/evil, etc.

Her note prompted us to take a few …

Sidewalk Power Plate Safety

Chris Witwer December 24, 2010 6 Comments

As reported in the Seattle Times, on Thanksgiving Queen Anne’s Lisa McKibbin lost her beloved dog Sammy as a result of “contact voltage” when a streetlight emitted an unsafe level of electrical voltage.  You can read the entire story here.

Last week, the Seattle PI’s Vanessa Ho reported that the sixth dangerous electrical cover was found at 85th & Greenwood, not so far from Wallingford.  Now we hear that City Light will inspect all 20,000 light poles & 10,000 covers next year.  (Thank you!)

But what if there’s a dangerous light in Wallingford right now?  What can we do?

City …
