Waste Not, Wallingford – for $50k

“My neighborhood’s greener than yours!” Now’s your chance to prove it. Waste Management, the garbage, recycling, and yard/food waste hauler for Wallingford, is launching its six month Recycling Challenge campaign this week. All Seattle neighborhoods serviced by Waste Management will compete against each other for a $50,000 prize. The community that reduces the most residential garbage, by weight, will receive a $50,000 grant for a “Main Street” neighborhood improvement project. To track each community’s progress, Waste Management will compare the percent…

Sock Monster Anniversary Contest

Happy first anniversary to Sock Monster, Wallingford's very own sock-centric retail shop on 45th.  We checked in with Sock Monster owner Holly Gummelt recently, to see how things are going.  And she sure does have a lot of news. First, the pinball machine and sodas are gone.  But this is really a good thing, because those items were actually placeholders until the shop grew a bit, which it has. Today, there is a kids corner where the pinball machine once stood. …

Want A Little (Book) Lust To Go?

Wallyhood’s Pumpkin Carving Contest

Last year, a neighbor's teenage son from up the street made the coolest Mario Jack-o'-lantern I'd ever seen; and the more I looked around while trick or treating with the kids, the more super awesomely cool pumpkin carvings I saw.  We've definitely got some talented folk here in Wallingford. And now we'd like to put your pumpkin carving skills to the test with our first annual Wallyhood Pumpkin Carving Contest.  Our good friends over at Archie McPhee have put together some…

Can Your Halloween Pin Win?

We were trolling through the Wallingford Center in search of mini cupcakes (they are hard to get hold of) when we happened upon this flier about a Halloween Pin Design Contest. Now, my daughter has a weird knack of winning contests.  She's won quite a few already as if sheer determination to win is enough.  Her eyes lit up and I could see her planning what to draw . . . . It's only fair, though, to have decent competition or…
