Bluebird Sandwich

Let's say the economy is in the dumps. Let's say further that the real estate market has led the charge into said dumps. Now let's say that your job depends on real estate and development because you're, say, an architect. Suddenly, there's not so much architecting going on. What do you do? Well, if you're our friend and Wallingford resident Nicole Winn, you start making really, really good sandwiches. As a Senior Associate at Weber Thompson, one of Seattle's top architectural…

Foraging

Recently, we came across a giant puffball mushroom (Calvatia Gigantea), a tasty edible, growing here in Wallingford, over by Eastern and 42nd. Well, we were pretty sure it was a giant puffball, and not the deadly amanita, with which is occasionally confused, but just to make sure, we snapped a picture with our iPhone and sent it off to our friend Matt. Matt's response was as succinct as it was wise: "Never identify mushrooms via MMS". True dat. Perhaps we'd be…

Seattle Launches New “Urban Agriculture” Site

As long-time beekeepers, hyperlocally famous tomato farmers and soon-to-be chicken ranchers, we here at Wallyhood are huge fans of the "urban homesteading" movement that is bringing previously rural-only farming practices to the city (and very local food to our table). Our city government, we're pleased to see, is on board as well, judging from this press release we got from the city: Mayor Mike McGinn and Seattle City Councilmembers today announced the “Year of Urban Agriculture” campaign to promote urban agriculture…

Flying Apron Bakery Cookbook

(In a rare turn, we're treated this week to a local cookbook review from the wonderful Mrs. Wallyhood.) I’m not a writer, I usually leave that up to Mr. Wallyhood. I’m not a professional chef, either, though I have had a few stints in kitchens. And I’m certainly not a book reviewer. But a health issue a few years ago did force me onto a gluten-free (and soy-free, dairy-free, egg-free, you-name-it-free) diet. I tasted its challenges, its limitations, feeling left out,…

Farmers Market Update

Nothing concrete to report on where, when and whether the Wallingford Farmers Market will return next year, but some comments from those involved. First, we checked in with Zach Lyons, the Communications Director for the Seattle Farmers Market Association (and brother of well-known folk musician Dana Lyons, of "Cows with Guns" fame). Here's what he had to say: We are currently negotiating for a site for the 2010 Wallingford Farmers Market, but as of this moment, nothing is set in stone.…

Wallingford Farmers Market in doubt?

We just read in the Wallingford eNewsletter (put out by the Wallingford Neighborhood Office) that the Wallingford Farmers Market won't be returning to Wallingford Center this coming year. A new location in Wallingford is being discussed, apparently (Good Shepherd Center)? They're also discussing changing the day of the week from Wednesday (Saturday?)

Cookin’ Up Community

(Wallyhood welcomes our newest writer, Helen Kim, reporting on last week's Wallingford Community Kitchen. Slideshow photos by Matt Mason.) Imagine being a member of a big extended family. Big. Really big. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, teenagers, even an adorable little baby. All cooking a big meal together. Now, imagine the residents of Wallingford as the members of that family in the kitchen of the Good Shepherd’s Senior Center. This was the scene at the Community Kitchen I attended on Friday night. About…
