Winchell’s Last Donut

Keen eyes alerted us to another fallen business on 45th Street: Winchell's. We got this note from an anonymous tipster yesterday morning: Any word on Winchells closing or are they just having a bad day? I walk by there twice a day to & from the bus but never pay much attention as I'm not that into donuts. This morning, I noticed two guys peeking in the window and this caught my attention so I glanced in to see a semi-dark…

Happy Birthday Essential Baking Cafe

This report sent in by Lower Wallingford Correspondent, Chris Witwer. I've posted things in the past that reference Essential Baking Cafe on 34th street, and when I gave folks directions to the Baby Maarten Yard Sale drop off I started by saying "You know where Essential Baking is...?" and everyone did.  But I don't think we've given them their own Wallyhood blog post yet.  So here's our excuse to do so: Wallingford's own Essential Baking Cafe is celebrating their 15th anniversary…

Wurst Festival

It says something that no less than five people e-mailed us today to make sure we knew that the free Wallingford Wurst Festival is happening this weekend, and not one of those people are involved in putting it on, just excited attendees. That said, we're not quite sure whether Sara was encouraging us, warning us or threatening us when she said "Wait 'til next year when Baby Z will want to go through the bouncy house at least 20 times!" From…

Seattle Tilth Harvest Fair

We almost forgot that this weekend is Seattle Tilth's annual Harvest Fair, a wonderland of fresh veggies, workshops, informational booths and live music, all going on Saturday, September 12, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. behind the Good Shepherd Center (4649 Sunnyside Ave N). Says they: There will be free hands-on activities to engage people of all ages.  People can meet urban livestock such as backyard chickens, goats and bees, and ask their owners questions.  The art of canning at home will be taught…

Farmer’s Market

We didn't get our usual e-mail from the organizers letting us know what will be fresh at today's Wallingford Farmer's Market (3 - 7 pm, Wallingford Center), but a bit of sleuthing told us that the cooking demonstration at 4 pm will by Chef Alex Pitts of Bella Cosa. We've had the pleasure of chatting food with Alex a number of times on visits to Bella Cosa, and what we say now is true: that man loves food. Passionately. We don't…

Wallingford Plum Soup

We couldn't stand it. Every day, we'd be out, strolling around the neighborhood, and there they were: two trees full of the brightest golden plums you've ever seen.  They ripened and ripened and eventually began to fall, big fat raindrop splashes of juicy plums, wasted windfall. We admit it: we wanted them! So this past Saturday, we got up our gumption and knocked on the door. Nobody was home, but we did notice a package waiting for pick-up, addressed to a…

Harvest Your Fruit

We need to keep this short, because our fingers are still sticky with purloined plum juice. While there's been lots of conversation in the comments section of our Fruit Robbers post on whether that's kosher, regardless, there's lots of fruit coming ripe in Wallingford, and, if you've got a tree with more fruit than you can handle, please don't let it go to waste. Lettuce Link is a project of Solid Ground that will harvest your fruit and distribute it to…
