Big Wheel Panini

You could call it "Big Wheel Panini" since it's adjacent to Big Wheel Auto Parts (4455 Stone Way N.), or you could call it "Pat's Panini Sandwiches" after its owner, Pat. Either way, Pat won't mind since he hasn't officially named his new hot panini sandwich stand, which is now open Mondays through Saturdays, from 10:00am to 6:00pm. Pat offers five different types of hot panini sandwiches, all for $5 each, except for the Grilled Cheese, which is only $4. Prices include…

Community Greenhouse Seeks Seedling Nurturers

If you’ve got the itch to get your hands in the dirt, the Wallingford greenhouse, aka “A Growing Community,” could use your help! You might remember that last summer, we featured Wallingford resident Cyrus Appell, who has donated the use of his backyard greenhouse to the greater good for the past five years. Thanks to the time donated by dozens of volunteers, thousands of seedlings have been distributed to giving gardens throughout Seattle. At harvest time, the fruits (and veggies) of…

A Tough Nut to Crack

Fruit tree steward, neighborhood recycling guru, and overall swell neighbor, Barb Burrill, shared a recent adventure in the Wallingford urban orchard: A couple of weeks ago while walking home from my son's school, I noticed a bunch of lime-like fruits lying on the ground and sidewalk beneath a huge tree. Some had split open and looked like what might be black walnuts. I remember finding a funny-looking nut shell when I was a child and learning from my mom that it…

Cooking for Compost at Thanksgiving

"Cooking for Compost?" Sounds like what happens when no one likes what I make for dinner. Maybe a better description is  "No Waste Recipes." Whatever the name, they'll help you have a more sustainable Thanksgiving feast. Prepare holiday dishes from fresh ingredients, without single-use packaging, where food waste can be used in other food or composted. This should be easy as pie in Seattle, where nearly all food scraps can go in the food and yard waste bin (the main exception…

Sandwich shop coming to Doggy Style space

Doggy Style East Coast Hot Dog stand came and went, but from its ashes (4455 Stone Way N) a sandwich shop is growing. I noticed someone working inside the space on Monday and met Pat, local to the neighborhood, who hopes to have his sandwich shop--name TBD--open in four weeks. I, for one, adore walk-up/bike-up food establishments (no need to lock up the bike or unload the kiddos) and while I regrettably never made it to Doggy Style, I can't wait…

Sip Cider and Dance

Join the Burke-Gilman Trail Urban Orchard Stewards on Sunday from noon to 3 pm at their 2nd Annual Cider Pressing event. The Orchard Stewards take care of 23 public fruit trees on the Trail between the University Bridge and just west of Gasworks Park. The one pear and 22 apple trees are thriving after many work parties this past year. In snow, rain, and even sun, volunteers removed blackberries, Scotch Broom, cherry laurel and English Ivy, spread wood chips and Zoo…
