Is that Jazz?

Did you catch that article in the New York Times back in August about Seattle's growing homegrown jazz scene (Seattle’s Alt-Rock Hub, Purring With Jazz)? Well, if you want to check out some of the finest sounds around, you don't need to get in your car or catch a bus. Just step out door and poke your head in at the Chapel Performance Space at the Good Shepherd Center (4639 Sunnyside Ave N), which is hosting the third annual Is That…

Off The Wall School Of Music

If you travel on 45th just above Stone Way, you might've seen the Off The Wall School of Music "Free Piano Lesson" sandwich board on the sidewalk and the giant banner on the side of a blue house on the corner of 45th and Midvale.  I'll admit, when I looked up the music school, I balked at the website's claim, "You can learn a song in 15-20 minutes!"  See, I've been taking piano lessons for the last four years and the…

Come Wassail Away

Used to be, when I thought of wassailing, I'd picture Christmas carolers in full Victorian-era costume, going door-to-door to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  But in reality, as I've come to learn, wassailing is a centuries-old English tradition, with one form that's deeply-rooted in apple trees. (3510 Stone Way N.) Here are the details: Monday, December 13th the Northwest Accordion Society…

Dave Matthews Charity Show

Wallingford's most famous resident, Dave Matthews, is giving a special acoustic performance with Tim Reynolds on Monday December 6th at McCaw Hall. Tickets go on sale tomorrow morning (Saturday, November 7th) at 10 am and are expected to sell out within hours. The twist? While the ticket prices are high ($135), more than 100% of it is going to charity: after you purchase, you'll get a token to use to direct $150 to a charity of your choice through JustGive.org. Flipping…

Ayron Jones and the Way

We're having a hard time wrapping our brain around this, but we're going to recommend you go to Babalu tonight. Yes, yes. The Babalu that our readers regularly decry for the idiocy it brings to the neighborhood. But tonight there's a band playing that, if we're to judge by the samples they have on-line, sound really good. So what are you going to do? If you like the blues, at least give them a listen. $5 cover, show starts at 9…
