Wading pool, library affected by proposed city budget

Mayor Mike McGinn released his proposed city budget for 2011 – 2012 on Monday, addressing the $67 million dollar shortfall in the City’s General Fund for 2011.  The proposed budget calls for the Wallingford wading pool to operate on a three day per week schedule next summer, similar to this year’s schedule.  The closest wading pool to operate seven days per week will be Green Lake. The proposed budget also calls for reducing “on-site librarian reference service in order to achieve…

Keep Your Babies Cool

As the temperature soared to 90 on Thursday, my kiddos and I took advantage of the Wallingford wading pool’s limited hours and sought refuge in the cool water. Friday’s supposed to be another swelter, and thankfully the wading pool will be open again from 12-7 p.m. Keep cool, Wallyhoodites! (Just a Reminder - The Wallingford Wading Pool is open only on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, from 12-7 p.m. They only open on days that are forecast to be warmer than 70°,…

Mutt Mitts comin’ our way

Good news on the Mutt Mitt front. I've just found out that our request has been approved and a work order was submitted this week for the return of our Mutt Mitt dispenser. For now, the Parks Department will regularly check the dispenser and re-stock as necessary. I've agreed to follow up with them in a few months to see…

Amores Perros Update

As a result of community feedback on my last playground post, Amores Perros, I contacted Seattle Parks and Recreation with our request for a MuttMitt dispenser for Wallingford Playfield. I've been informed by a communications manager that due to budget cuts, the Parks Department will not be able to accomodate all requests as they have in the past, but he has put it to the attention of the grounds supervisor so it is now officially under consideration. I'll provide an update once I get word of the decision.…

The Arch is Back!

Greg Flood from Friends of Wallingford Playfield delivered the happy news that the climbing arch that was removed from Wallingford Playfield earlier this year (The Case of the Missing Monkey Bars) is being reinstalled: Parks let us know that the arch climber at Wallingford Playfield would be installed sometime this week and, sure enough, Parks is out there today [Tuesday] reinstalling it.  Yippee.  The climber was a treasured feature of the playground and is just plain good exercise. Thanks, Parks, for…

Hold it or run

After a week of rainy days, we Seattleites got a reprieve this weekend, so our family did what comes natural when the sun comes out: we made a beeline for Wallingford Park. We hit the park Friday, Saturday and Sunday, pulling one daily double, and we were certainly not alone. Tons of kids were running in, on, and around the play structure, swings were being swung, and the merry go round was on fire. It wasn’t an atypical park scene by…
