Editor's note: I will update this list as often as I can, and include restaurants all over the neighborhood, not just on 45th St. I can't be everywhere and also homeschool my kids, so please send me your info on restaurants near you! –Katy *** I checked out the restaurants on 45th St. to find out which are offering take-out and delivery. None are allowing customers to dine in. Almost all have you come in the front door to pick up,…

Inspired for Spring?

I spent a recent evening at the Northwest Flower and Garden Show and the theme of the week was “Spring Fever”.  They even had vegetables planted in a canoe! Does anyone else feel that spring is in the air? Are you excited to start digging in the dirt? I was inspired by a talk by Brian Minter who is the Co-owner and president, Minter Country Garden Store, an innovative destination garden center and greenhouse growing operation in Chilliwack, British Columbia, Canada.  He…

Well, it's been A WEEK. Things are changing so quickly in response to the coronavirus outbreak, it is hard to know what to do. So many of the small businesses that make our neighborhood so great are in danger of closing forever, and many of the most vulnerable in our community are teetering on the edge. Below are some ways you can support neighbors and local businesses while still maintaining social distance. There has been a reduction in donations of groceries…

Life in the Time of Coronavirus

I took a stroll up 45th Street Saturday afternoon to check in on the local Wallingford businesses amidst the pandemic. There were a few surprises. First stop was Slave the Needle tattoo parlor, where business was healthy (I saw three people getting inked on a Saturday afternoon), if a bit slow. There, they told me there had been a few cancelations, what with childcare during the day suddenly an issue, and of course tattoos being a luxury when paychecks are reduced…

The COVID pandemic is impacting us all in some obvious ways: public and private schools are closed at least through April 24, businesses of all types have seen their clientele evaporate as people practice "social distancing", store shelves are emptied of essentials like toilet paper and disinfectants. It's also impacting some of the most vulnerable in unexpected ways. FamilyWorks Food Bank and Family Resource Center, which provides essential groceries to elderly, poor and homeless in our community, gets much of the…

45th St Central Market

Continuing to shuffle through the trove of historical photos that were dropped on my porch (anyone want to cop to it?), let's take a look at this sweet then-and-now pair: I wasn't able to dig up much about the 45th St Central Market pictured, nor do I have a date for that photo. The care on the left seems like it is a 1930's model, though, and I did find that the Lady Betty Bakery moved from 1912 N. 45th (where…

Growing Good Apples 101

The apple trees are budding in Wallingford, and if you want a good harvest you should start tending to them soon. I’m not a fruit tree expert, but I am an avid backyard gardener and a nerd who reads a lot. It took me several years of research and trial and error to finally yield a good harvest from my own apple tree. Hopefully what I’ve learned can help you, too.  In my mind, I like to separate apple tree problems…
