Meet Nickelsville

"Nickelsville came about in response to the sweeps of encampments ordered by former Mayor Greg Nickels [2002 - 2010]. After six months of  organizing Nickelsville set up on an unused piece of city owned land on West Marginal Way on September 22, 2008. That afternoon the encampment was posted with notifications that it would be swept.  Five days later several dozen homeless people and their allies were arrested.  Nickelsville immediately set up on an adjacent state owned parking lot. Governor Gregoire…

The Great Wallingford Wurst Festival - Friday, Sept. 21 4-10pm, Saturday, Sept. 22 10am - 10pm This event likely needs little introduction, as the signs blanket the neighborhood. The Wurst Fest is celebrating its 35th year. The event is a fund raiser for St. Benedict Catholic School, a K-8 school located next door to St. Benedict Catholic Church. The event draws upwards of 10,000 people to the neighborhood as a fundraiser for a school with 215 students. Would that all fundraisers…

QFC Now Open 20 Hours a Day

QFC is no longer open 24 hours.  QFC served as the late night/early morning hub for the neighborhood.  It was sad day on the 9th when I arrived to a closed sign.  Later that morning, I stopped back in and the overnight cashier said it had been a long time coming.  The cashier cited too many thefts, too many interruptions, and too many drugs taken by the late night clientele. University Village QFC is now the closest grocery for that middle…

Cubes Baking Company ( 2315 N 45th St ) has been open about a year.  They have proven to be a lively neighbor with frequent events.  The year seems to have been successful for them as I see quite a few people in the shop, and they get great reviews. They are celebrating Mexican Independence Day this week with an even on Saturday.  Their blurb on the event follows: We will be hosting a pop-up on Saturday, September 15th from 11am - 3pm…

Fruity Signs

Round about this time of year, when all the fruits and vegetables that have survived our dry Seattle summer are coming ripe, folks strolling the neighborhood start looking gazing at the cornucopia around us with wonder...and maybe a bit of hunger. Every year, for example, I pass this apple tree on NE 42nd Street and cry a little bit over the waste: whoever owns it never harvests, and the apples end up rotting on the ground. So what's the etiquette? Are…

[Editor Note: After initial posting, a member of the Navigation Team reached out to us with comment.  These comments are included at the end of the post unedited.] On Wednesday, September 5, the Wallingford Community Council  hosted the City of Seattle's Homeless Navigation Team for a discussion on the homeless issue, unsanctioned camping, illegal camping, potential solutions to the homeless problem and a question and answer session. We learned that the Navigation Team consists of only four field coordinators, eight police…

Wallingford Farmers Market – The Unrending

(Ed Note: The Wallingford Farmers Market runs through September 26th this year. That gives you three more chances to enjoy a stroll to your local farmers market before the long, bleak gray descends. Get on it!) The Wallingford Farmers Market (Wednesdays, 4 - 7 pm in Meridian Park, through late September) is a highly attended community event: long lines for naan, kids running everywhere, buskers playing the Star Wars theme on a cello. My own experience suggests that half of the…
