April is National Poetry Month, so in honor of such, I took a pedal around to the three spots where you can consistently find public poetry in our neighborhood. The Poetry Bench at Eastern Ave N at N 40th St had a piece by Leigh Hunt (1784 - 1859) out: Abou Ben Adhem Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!) Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace, And saw, within the moonlight in his room, Making it rich, and…

I asked the Seattle Police Department for more information on the incident and received the following reply.  It is cut and pasted, unchanged from the SPD response below:   On Saturday evening at approximately 8:00 pm officers responded to reports of a man with a gun in the 200 block of NE 45th St.  As officers were headed to the call, there were updates from other 911 callers stating that the same individual had been harassing tenants inside an apartment building, and…

Save the Date: the Return of Wallingford Walks

As the new librarian for the Wallingford Library, I've been talking with folks and trying to get a sense of what sort of programming would work with our small library and amazing neighborhood. I decided to develop a series of educational programs that go outside the library, lead by people from the community, showcasing both local resources and library materials. Little did I realize that I was reinventing the wheel! I recently learned that Wallingford Walks previously was born as the…

I’m sure we’ve all been there. You’re walking around the city. It could be Seattle; it could be someplace else. Suddenly, you need to go. But where? You look frantically for a public restroom sign, but there are none to be seen. In desperation, you slip into a nearby cafe, tiptoeing past the “Restrooms for Customers Only” sign. On the way out, perhaps a twinge of guilt prompts you to buy a cup of coffee -- partly renewing the problem that…
