Nickelsville Coming to Wallingford

Nickelsville Ballard, the city-sanctioned, self-managed homeless encampment presently homed on Market Street in Ballard will be decamping to Wallingford shortly. Founded in 2008 (and named as a not-tribute to then-mayor Greg Nickels), the community operates with the city's blessing, which acknowledges that "there is insufficient supply of low-barrier shelter beds for any given night and outreach workers often find that the City's emergency shelter system does not meet the needs of people living unsheltered." Besides the fact that they fill up…

As promised, here is the result of my interview with mayoral candidate Jenny Durkan. Due to Jenny's busy campaign schedule, we were unable to sit down to talk face-to-face so I sent her my questions and she provided the following responses to them. I want to thank Jenny and her campaign team for the great communication and cooperation. You can learn more about Jenny Durkan and her campaign at http://www.jennyforseattle.com Glenn:  Your opponent has been described as a “Progressive Urbanist”. How…

Back on October 21, we posted photos (many from readers) of some “unique and bizarre” (or perhaps “whimsical and original” as one reader preferred to term them) items to be found around the neighborhood. We challenged readers to identify the locations where the photos were taken. Scroll through the gallery below to find the answers as well as some interesting back stories that some contributors sent in, and some late entries we just received. If you want to create unique artwork,…

Trick or Treating at Wallingford Center

  • Post author:

Though I would personally prefer to cross paths with Jordan and his whiskey wagon on Halloween, some parents, especially those with younger children, may prefer an easier, hassle-free trick-or-treating option to just get the job done. For those families who like to keep the holiday short and simple, but still sweet,  Wallingford Center is your best bet. From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Halloween night, all twelve shops will be participating in the free, family-friendly festivities. The center is always…

Enjoying Life on the Sunnyside

When I first moved to Seattle in 1993, I regularly visited a coffee shop in the University District called The Last Exit on Brooklyn. The large, rustic, high-ceilinged warehouse space was a sanctuary for the artistic, bohemian counterculture—a vestige of the beat generation—that once defined the city. The large, round wooden tables were always filled with “long-haired hippies” (both old and young) sketching in notepads and painting at easels; reading and writing (with actual pen and paper) poetry, novels, and song…

Win-Win Solutions To Housing Affordability and Neighborhood Livability?

  • Post author:

Pro-HALA folks paint San Francisco as our nightmare future if HALA doesn't pass, where all housing near jobs costs millions of dollars. Anti-HALA folks paint Ballard as our future if HALA passes, where existing residents are driven out by a construction tsunami and we are left with luxury housing that is 95% tech bros (plus 5% reserved for a few token "poor" people that win the MHA lottery) I sat down with some Wallingford HALA proponents, looking for win-win solutions to housing…

Interview With Mayoral Candidate Cary Moon

  • Post author:

Last Friday I sat down with mayoral candidate Cary Moon to ask her a series of questions about her candidacy and how her election might effect the residents of Wallingford. Cary was congenial, open and candid while she answered every question that I posed to her. I viewed my role as just a reporter who asked the questions and did not challenge any of her answers and remarks. I want to thank Cary and her team for the time they shared…
