Wait a minute—jazz at Murphy’s?  That’s right, each fourth Wednesday night Phil Sparks and Leif Totusek play straight ahead jazz. Both Phil and Leif are elders in the jazz scene. Phil’s bass can strike awe into any jazz lover’s heart. Leif’s ancient Stratocaster sings, dances through Phil's awesome bass. Come out to Murphy’s 9:00 to 'round midnight each 4th Wednesday. Enjoy the food that you love to feel guilty about. Hear and toast these two wonderful musicians as they create ingenious…

If you feel like City Hall is not listening, it’s time to subscribe to our 4 to Explore newsletter for North Seattle, in addition to Wallyhood. Founded four years ago, 4 to Explore covers issues and events from Wallingford to Wedgwood. No ads and no holding back. Legendary urban thinker Jane Jacobs quickly discovered that City Hall often ignores individual neighborhoods. “Sometimes the city [government] is not the potential helper, but the antagonist of a street,” she wrote in her seminal work The…

Brush Fire on 40th

The fire started about 11:45 am near the intersection of 40th and Pacific nearly under the I-5 bridge. This grassy, wooded area has been host in recent years to Rent-a-Ruminants as well as a homeless population. It is currently fenced off. I couldn't see how it might have started, but the fire department was there pretty fast to put it out. No injuries or damage (other than to grass, shrubs, etc.) that I could see.

New Development at 46th and Stone Way

The Ballardization of Stone Way continues with this beauty, located at the corner of 46th and Stone Way, by the Wallingford Post Office: There's not much information available yet, even through the Seattle Design Review, but keen-eyed observers may raise an eyebrow at the ratio of units to parking spaces. Some residents will argue it is ludicrous, whereas mathematicians will simply describe it as undefined. This isn't the first development near Wallingford to go up recently without parking spaces. The new…

This past weekend dozens of neighbors of all ages re-painted the ladybug (a.k.a. Wallybug) at Burke Avenue North and N. 49th Street. Let’s give a big thanks to everyone who came out to refresh this whimsical and vibrant mural! On Saturday evening the cleanup crew got to work pulling weeds, sweeping, and pressure washing the intersection in preparation for Sunday's painting. This year’s record-setting dry spell was threatened by rain on Sunday. Luckily, the rains held off and the painting crew…

Bike Share is Back!

You’ve probably seen them by now, the bright green bikes and the bright orange bikes scattered randomly throughout Wallingford and other neighborhoods, signaling the return of bike share to Seattle. With the demise of Pronto earlier this year Seattle became the first American city with a failed bike share system. We are now getting a second chance with not just one, but with two new bike share systems: LimeBike (the green ones) and Spin  (the orange ones). The biggest difference between…
