Wallingford, Birthplace of “The Stranger”

This week, The Stranger (aka “Seattle’s Only Newspaper”) is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its first issue. I moved to Seattle in 1992 and, like many Seattleites, I have had a love/hate relationship (mostly love) with the publication ever since. The Stranger is so closely identified with Capitol Hill, that it was much to my surprise to read in this week’s An Oral History of the First Year of The Stranger that the newspaper’s birthplace wasn’t on Broadway or Pine, but…

Storm Prep

Looks like Wallingford weathered Friday's wind without too much trouble: the worst I saw was a bunch of windfall apples rolling around the streets. Saturday is the big day, though, with Cliff Mass reporting "the big storm will be[Saturday], late afternoon and evening": I have looked at the latest forecast model output and they are all on pretty much the same page, which increases forecast confidence substantially.  The bottom line is that we have a  dangerous storm, comparable to the 2006 Chanukah…

Back in July, the city opened the Micro Community Policing Plans website offering citizens a far more detailed look than was available previously into how criminal activities were distributed across neighborhoods and what specific crimes were being committed. This website breaks crimes down into 8 major categories (4 categories of crimes against persons and 4 of crimes against property) and 68 subcategories which include, for example, 8 different types of theft. The data goes back to 2008, and is downloadable as an…

Just a reminder: this coming Wednesday, October 12th, from 7 - 9 pm, we're inviting readers, writers, editors, commenters and lurkers to come put a face with the name at Murphy's Pub (1928 N 45th St). It's been something like four or five years since our last meet-up, and we're long overdue. On the fence? Murphy's has offered to pour a few pitchers for us on the house, and Wallyhood will be kicking in for some appetizers to keep you thirsty. I…

Nationwide creepy clown epidemic hits close to home

A neighbor, writing on the Wallingford/Fremont Community Facebook page, posted the following: During our walk around Green Lake tonight saw one of these scary clowns. I am not okay with it and don't get it. Just a heads up if you are taking your kids in the next few days - had blood all over and some kind of choking device around his neck. Much has been written about the unexplained rash of creepy clown sightings all over the country and in…

(The following is a sponsored post from Kris Murphy & Daniela Dombrowski, www.Key2SeattleRealEstate.com) Wallingford and Tangletown continue to be highly sought after by today’s home buyers. It is no wonder with our continuing technology boom that people want to live close to the job centers and avoid the I-5 commute at all costs. As we know, our neighborhood is very accessible and convenient and it offers restaurants, shops, parks and other goodies and you don’t even need to leave to cover your daily…
