Don’t Paint My Village

It's been almost a year since I joined the Wallingford Community Council with concerns over the future of our neighborhood and our city in the face of rampant development.  After countless hours of following HALA and Seattle’s land use politics, I frequently find myself mumbling and grunting in frustration like Yosemite Sam.  I picture wealthy developers like Vulcan sitting down and writing out policy after policy that will give them more power (and us less).  In exchange, our elected officials at…

So, you remember last week there was a fire on 4th Ave? Everyone, including the twin 6-month-old girls, got out safely. While most of the second floor tenants' things were destroyed in the fire, the first floor and basement tenants escaped with only smoke damage to their belongings... Until the looters showed up. Moe's story starts on the Friday afternoon before the fire: I had just got home from work, my boyfriend was at my place, and my landlord had just gotten…

Krystal, the office manager of Bedrooms and More, alerted us to a crime that happened in their parking garage on Friday, August 19th. When watching the video, the vandals first appear after 53 seconds. This all occurred in afternoon at a little after 4pm on Friday, 8/19/16. The teens(?) spend about 10 minutes defacing the parking garage until they are scared off by a passerby. Who knows what else they would have done had they not been stopped? One of the…

Preserving Your Views in Wallingford

As we all know, the views in Seattle can be spectacular, and some people will go to great lengths to create them or preserve them. Some have even resorted to poisoning trees, as occurred along the Burke Gilman trail back in 2008. And there are a host of strictly legal means to…

Fire on 4th Ave

Strolling down to Dunn Lumber on Sunday morning, I was shocked to see a charred facade where our neighbor's house at 4019 4th Ave NE had stood unscathed just days ago. It was especially disturbing because I know that it was a duplex with newborn twins living on the second floor. So it was a relief to hear from Scott today that while it was serious, everybody got out safely: Friday night, we settled in to bed and were awoken at 4:20…
