Wallingford Community Senior Center Seeks New Executive Director

The Wallingford Community Senior Center (WCSC) has been in the Good Shepherd Center at 50th and Sunnyside ever since 1979. As a firm fixture in the Wallingford neighborhood, it has served both our seniors and the whole community with a mix of programs, social services, and as a meeting space for the community. At first it was supported by a combination of Federal and local funding through Senior Services, but over time the politicians came up with less and less money.…

Another Look at the Proposed 2016 Housing Levy

On May 2, 2016, I posted an article on the proposed 2016 housing levy expressing my concerns about the rationale used to determine the amount of the levy, which was double the expiring levy passed in 2009. The mayor's proposal calls for $201 million vs. $104 million, which was the cost of the expiring 2009 levy. The proposed levy will only deliver 2,150 new units and 350 retrofitted units, which is less than the number of units delivered under the old levy (see…

There has been a lot of discussion about HALA, but a far broader change to Seattle land use policy is coming up in the form of a new version of the Comprehensive Plan.  The City is required to draft a Comprehensive Plan which acts as a roadmap for urban planning over a 20 year period.  We have reached the end of that 20 year period for our first Comprehensive Plan, so Mayor Ed Murray has undertaken to write another one, which…

Wading Pools Next Week

  • Post author:

Too late for for this weekend's sunny Sunday, Seattle's wading pools, including Wallingford Park's, open this coming Wednesday, June 29th. It's a three-day-a-week pool (Wednesday through Friday) noon - 7 pm. But, Seattle being Seattle (and not, say, Phoenix), it doesn't always make sense to fill the pools: We will plan to open the wading pools on sunny days when the temperature is forecast to be 70 degrees or higher. On most days we will fill them half full, which is…

Lincoln School Redesign

Lincoln High is getting a $19M update. An earlier version of this story mentioned that that part of this would involve changing the parking lot into a playfield (which would have a pretty big impact on the surrounding neighborhood), but I got a few notes that this was in error. Rachel wrote: I just wanted to correct some of the information you posted about the proposed athletic field at Lincoln High School.  I was on the design committee as a community…
