Sheep Go To Heaven…

In October 2013, goats came to Wallingford. If the comments on Jordan’s post back then are any indication, most of the neighborhood was delighted by the arrival of our new four-legged friends. The excitement doubled when, a week later, an autumn windstorm blew down the temporary fences corralling the goats, inciting Wallingford’s first “goat rodeo.” The goats were quickly wrangled and resumed their assigned task of clearing brush and brambles in the open space directly under I-5, bordered by Upper and…

Announcements trickle in to us from time to time, and although we're happy to promote neighborhood events and free community services, we don't have any really appropriate places to put them. So I've grouped together a few recent items here! Cooped Up in Seattle 4-H Club Poultry Show, June 11, 2016 (This comes to us from Ju Namkung, leader of the Wallingford 4-H club.) It’s that time of year … time for Cooped Up in Seattle 4-H club’s annual poultry show!…

Coffee Tokens & Other Opportunities for Kindness

While paying for my usual 12 oz latte, lemon crepe, and ½ Pacific Northwest salad, I recently took notice of a jar of wooden tokens near the register at one of my favorite cafes, the Essential Bakery.  When I inquired about it, I was told that you could pay for an extra cup of coffee, they would put a token in the jar, and then someone from the community could redeem it for a free cup of coffee.  Here is what…

Airbnb clampdown

  • Post author:

Seattle City Councilman Tim Burgess and Mayor Murray have proposed a new law that would fundamentally change the way Airbnb operates in Seattle, rolling back the conversions of long-term units to Airbnb short-term rentals, and perhaps driving a cold stake through the heart of the Seattle Airbnb market. I've been in this game for a while now: back in 2012, we decided to take the mother-in-law apartment we had built out in our Wallingford basement and convert it from a $900…

Pam's Kitchen, the Trinidad-homestyle eatery that opened last year on 45th St thinks that if you just came in and tried the food, you'd be hooked. So to encourage those first-time customers-to-be to get themselves in and see what it's all about, they're offering a free lunch this Sunday, June 5th from 12 - 3 pm. All the recipes are made from scratch from Pam's traditional upbringing in Trinidad. On the menu: Curry Chicken: Classic Trinidadian curry influenced by India. Pelau: Similar to a Jambalaya with chicken,…

Why an “Urban Village” needs HALA

(Rick Mohler is an associate professor at the University of Washington Department of Architecture, a principal at Mohler+Ghillino Architects and Wallingford resident, natch.) Last month I moderated a forum on urban housing that was assembled by the Seattle chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Having been engaged in the Wallingford Community Council’s effort to understand and respond to HALA, I opened the forum by expressing my enthusiasm for the lively, and sometimes contentious, citywide discussion that’s been initiated by the…

Homeless Encampment Burning

  • Post author:

The homeless encampment under I-5 at NE 42nd Street is on fire, police and firefighters are there. No word on what caused it, and nobody appeared to be hurt.  Update at 2:30 PM: Everything's out, just a burnt out camp. There are a remarkable number of bike parts (I saw four stripped frames, plus piles of parts), as well as gas cans, tools and other detritus.
