Prowler targeting businesses in Wallingford

Ed Hartman over at The Drum Exchange wanted to let folks know about a prowler in the neighborhood: A prowler has trespassed through several businesses' back doors, attempting to steal computers, etc. He's African American, about 6 ft. tall, medium-build with a mustache. He's been seen drinking a can of either tea or beer and appears slightly drunk, and he smokes cigarettes He walked into our business today (Mon Feb 18, 2013 4pm) saying he didn't realize it wasn't OK to do. …

Wallingford – Leading the City in Veg Consumption

Are you an observer of Meatless Monday, a flexitarian, or otherwise reducing your meat consumption? If so, you apparently are not alone! Seattle Times news librarian Gene Balk recently analyzed Seattle’s consumer spending habits and the availability of meat-free cuisine by neighborhood, determining that Wallingford ranks first in the city for its love of veggies. Yep. We eat our five daily servings here in the 'hood, out-munching runners-up Fremont, Ballard, Greenlake and Queen Anne. A stroll along 45th Street with vegetarian main…

Kitaro Update

We'd like to thank Reeve Baily for providing us with the following update on Kitaro, (1624 N. 45th St.) which had been destroyed by a fire on the night of December 7, 2011: Last week my wife and I were standing in line at Molly Moon's when the communal chatter came to the subject of the sadly crumbling Kitaro Sushi/Bento. "I heard that grumpy dude took the insurance money and moved to Belize," said one fellow. "No, no, no, the owners…

State of Kate’s Pub Union

Tomorrow, President Obama will address the nation in his first State of the Union since the 2012 elections. He's expected to outline his agenda for economy and job creation, hopefully with at least a hat tip to climate change. He may also discuss the exit strategy for the Afghanistan war. If all this political talk tickles your wonk bone, then join the 43rd District Democrats for a viewing at Kate's Pub (309 NE 45th St) from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm.…

Bus Bulb Update

Last summer, I posted about the construction of bus bulbs and other transit improvements along 45th Street. After a recent post about proposed changes to N. 40th Street, Wallyhood got an earful about the bus bulbs on 45th. So I thought it would be a good time to check in with Mr. SDOT, Jeff Bender, who explains all manner of transit and traffic improvements to the willing lay person. To recap, bus bulbs, or sidewalk extensions that allow buses to load and unload…

Silver Tray Opens Tomorrow

Ambling home down 45th St last night, we noticed some work going on in the old Lotus Thai at the corner of Meridian, which closed back in January. Turns out the man screwing in light bulbs at 10 o'clock at night was Apple, part of the husband and wife team that bought the business when the owners of Lotus Thai retired. Apple arrived in the US from Thailand on September 9, 2001 (yep, that September) and his wife Lucky arrived shortly…
