Walllyhood Weekend Round-Up

As the weekend fast approaches, Wallyhood has been busy constructing a list of local happenings.  Let's hope the weather cooperates and we'll get to see some more of that fiery ball in the sky.  Happy weekend, Wallingford! Students climbing to new heights on JSIS playground

Earlier in the week we posted the details about the new playground at John Stanford, and the ribbon cutting ceremony that was scheduled for Tuesday.  Wallingford neighbor and photographer Nancy Treder attended the ceremony for the snazzy new playground, and she was kind enough to send us the following report and set of photos.  Take it away, Nancy, and thank you! Students climbing to new heights on JSIS playground Grey skies nor the threat of rain seemed to dampen the spirits…

Tonight is Science Night at Hamilton

Hamilton International Middle School (1610 N. 41st. Street) will host its second annual Science Night tonight, from 6:30-8:30 pm.  It's a wonderful opportunity for students and families (even those outside of the Hamilton community) to look at some pretty cool hands-on exhibits. I mean, where else do you have the opportunity to learn about Strawberry DNA Extraction?  For free? Last year, Wallywriter and photographer Matt Mason went to Hamilton's inaugural Science Night and put together a fun photo presentation.  Have a…

Is that Jazz?

Did you catch that article in the New York Times back in August about Seattle's growing homegrown jazz scene (Seattle’s Alt-Rock Hub, Purring With Jazz)? Well, if you want to check out some of the finest sounds around, you don't need to get in your car or catch a bus. Just step out door and poke your head in at the Chapel Performance Space at the Good Shepherd Center (4639 Sunnyside Ave N), which is hosting the third annual Is That…

Farmers Market

We're not quite sure what it says about Wallingford that the biggest kerfuffle we've got going is on whether and where to put a Farmers Market. Nice, ya know? Some places, everyone's up in each other's grill about abortion rights, immigration, health care and gun control, but in Wallingford, it's radicchio and rutabaga that gets everyone hot under the collar. Well, the saga continues. Zach Lyons alerts us that there will be a community meeting tomorrow, Wednesday January 19th from 7:00 -…

(In honor of Martin Luther King Day, we're re-running this "classic" Wallyhood post from MLK Day 2010. Also, if you happen to have been listening to NPR's The Takeaway at 3:49 am this morning, you will have heard me being interviewed along with two other people named for MLK. The recording should be available on the The Takeaway web site, if it's not already.) My full, legal name is Jordan Luther King Schwartz. Kind of an unusual name for a white…
