Ladybug and the Turtle

It sounds like a children's story doesn't it? Maybe someday it will be, the touching story of two designs, painted on intersections in a little neighborhood called Wallingford. The Ladybug up at 49th and Burke is getting some company this weekend: a group of neighbors led by Bill Lindberg around Interlake Ave N and N 41st St will be painting a turtle designed by Rachel Marcotte in their intersection. The mural is funded in part by the city’s Department of Neighborhoods…

Weekend Roundup

The SeaFair parades have come and gone, somebody probably won the hydro races, and the last zombie has slunk away from the Fremont Outdoor Movies screen.  Bumbershoot is fast approaching. Looks like summer 2010 will soon be an all too brief memory. There are, however, still some things on tap for this upcoming "summer" weekend (Fix it, Cliff Mass! Help!): City Cellars Wine Tasting 5-7pm Friday.  $3-5 per flight.   Website says they'll be uncorking some $15 Washington cabernets. T.G.I.F. Bomb night…

Wallingford Farmers Market Moving

Trust us when we tell you that we've spared you sturm und drang and bring you straight to the happy conclusion (for now). The Wallingford Farmers Market has known for some time now that its home in the parking lot south of Wallingford Center was temporary: a number of Wallingford Center businesses resented the loss of the parking spaces they were promised as part of their lease and, in any case, the area set aside for the market simply wasn't big…

Seattle Libraries Closed 8/30 thru 9/6

All Seattle library locations, including the Wallingford branch, will be closed August 30th through Labor Day, returning to regular schedules again on Tuesday 9/7. The closures are in response to 2010 budget cuts.  Closing the libraries for a week will hopefully keep additional operations cuts at bay.  For this year anyway. Here's the overview: All book drops will be closed!  Wait to return books until 9/7. Late fees will not accrue during the closure. You'll be able to search the library's…

ISB Moving Out of Wallingford

Neighbors in lower Wallingford often refer to the Institute for Systems Biology as "the biology place."  As good a nickname as any for the non-profit institute built on the concept of systems biology. ISB co-founder Leroy Hood has announced that the Institute has outgrown its Wallingford home and is relocating to South Lake Union. A recent X-conomy Seattle article explains that the Institute had to move its administrative staff to another location last year to accommodate the growing number of scientists…
