This is the last week before summer vacation for Seattle Public Schools. Here's a look at some of the things happening at our neighborhood's schools: B.F. Day: B.F. Day is hosting a Kindergarten Orientation on Tuesday, June 19, from 6:30-7:30PM, beginning in the library (3921 Linden Avenue N.). Woodland Park Co-op Preschool Hosts a ‘Playdate’

JSIS Fundraiser to Send Fifth Graders to Japan

By fifth grade, the students at John Stanford International have been immersed in a foreign language (Spanish or Japanese) for six years; but for students in the Japanese track, the ultimate exercise in immersion comes during the summer of their last year, when they spend five days living with a host family in Japan. Assistance League awards summer camp scholarships

Wallingford-based Assistance League of Seattle has awarded $32,000 in enrichment scholarships this year to 70 students from Seattle Schools through its annual Enrichment Scholarship Program. John Stanford International School Margie Butcher writes: My 2nd grade class at John Stanford Elementary School will be at Whole Foods on Roosevelt this Sunday from 10:00-2:00 selling canvas bags they decorated as a part of our Action Network project to benefit homeless animals.  All proceeds will go to Old Dog Haven, who will have both human and canine volunteers at the event!  The bags are made from cotton scraps and recycled pop bottles, and will be sold for $20. JSIS student places second in writing competition

Congratulations to Emma Snavely, a fifth-grader at John Stanford International School, who took second place in a national creative writing competition sponsored by the American Immigration Council. The American Immigration Council asked fifth-grade students to write about why they were glad America is a nation of immigrants, and encouraged entrants to share their personal experiences, family histories, or their views on the challenges incoming immigrants face when they arrive in the U.S. Emma wrote two very moving poems titled "Crossing the Line" and…
