Stone Soup Theater’s ‘The Young Man from Atlanta’

There's a bit of the voyeur in all of us, isn't there? A draw to those certain pieces of literature that offer a glimpse into someone else's private tragedy or sorrow. Horton Foote's Pulitzer Prize-winning play gives the audience more than a glimpse--its characters break down the human condition blatantly, emphatically and simply. I could touch their pain and feel the tension. I wanted to move the few feet from my seat onto the set of the Kidder family living room and…

Misty Montaigne’s Night of Fabulousness

Ah, the traditional variety show. A little comedy, some singing, some male belly dancing, some balloon animals, a bit of acrobalance, some aerials. Did we mention dessert? OK, maybe not so traditional. This smorgasborg of entertainment is coming to OmCulture (2210 N. Pacific St) this Friday and Saturday, April 15th and 16th at 8 pm. We caught up with Wallingford's own Misty Montaigne for breakfast at Julia's recently and got the scoop: Wallyhood: So where did the idea for the show…

Double (XX) Fest

Stone Soup Theatre announces The Double (XX) Fest, a festival of plays written and directed exclusively by women, April 7 - April 24th. And no, get your head out of the gutter. I said DOUBLE X (XX) as in DNA, chromosomes & all that.  I did not say triple X,  cheeky monkey.  The (XX) Fest continues in the tradition of the now-defunct Mae West Fest, which ran for nearly a decade.  But the (XX) Fest goes a step further. It's a…

First, the Seattle Public Theater (on Green Lake) is seeking interns for the summer. Kenna Kettrick writes: Are you between the ages of 14-25, and interested in teaching or directing theater? We have an internship for you! Interns work with our professional teaching artists, with younger children's camps or older students' multi-week productions. Internships…

Not Exactly “The Happy Ones”

Here's my quick thumbs-up versus thumbs-down rundown for Green Lake's Bathhouse Theater's current production of "The Happy Ones": Ah, Southern California in the '70.  Even if I wasn't there, I watched it on The Brady Bunch and that was the life The soundtrack to The Big Chill is my favorite Fun-lovin', outspoken leading lady in tall leather boots?  Groovy! Not at all happy.  Sad.  Too, too sad I have no nostalgia for the '70's.  The '70's are over-rated Eh, California -…

Stoned Soup

We were chatting with our friend D. the other day, who mentioned he had recently attended a performance at Stone Soup Theatre's production of How I Learned To Drive, by Paula Vogel. We reproduce our best recollected transcription of his orally delivered review here: Oh hey, you know that little theater on Stone Way, little place tucked in up from that pit on 40th? Hey, it's a gem. We stopped in there, pretty baked one night last week, just on a…
