Not A Number Not A Movin’

We just got a call from Kara over at Not A Number who, you may remember, told us just last week that they were likely going to have to move out of Wallingford for good. At the eleventh hour, a reprieve has come! Here is the message we got from Kara on our voicemail: Exactly a week to the day after we announced at the Chamber lunch that we would be closing or moving probably outside the entire area of Wallingford,…

For the Love of Math!

You've heard this a million (10 to the power of 6) times, but it is frightening.  In the 2009 (41 X 49)  Program for International Student Assessment US 15-year-olds ranked 25th (4! + 1) among 34 (square root of 1156) countries in math falling behind Canada, New Zealand, Finland, and Asian countries such as China, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong. To counter this sad trend, stop by The Math Salon at Mosaic Coffeehouse on February 28th from 4-6 PM:…

Gimme Some Pancakes!

Yes!  The Wallingford Community Senior Center is going back to holding its popular Sunday Pancake Breakfast quarterly.  Okay, it's not as good as being able to stuff yourself with homemade pancakes and French toast for a good cause every month, but it's a start! The next one is February 27th from 9 AM to 12 PM in the basement of the Good Shepherd Center.  Adults only $5 and Kids $2.50.  Just follow your nose. Photo by oddharmonic.

B.F. Day School

Continuing our series on Wallingford attendance area Seattle Public Schools, here's a look at Seattle's oldest continually operating school in Seattle:  B.F. Day. Founded in 1892, B.F. Day School in Fremont was built on a block of 20 lots generously donated by landowner Benjamin Franklin Day who asked that educators build not only a school, but a good school.  We feature B.F. Day here because it is a linked school, which means that if you opt out of the language immersion…

Taco Truck Upgrade

In a recent post on Not a Number's search for a new home, we suggested they might move into the derelict Winchell's donut shop. As you may remember, when the old Winchell's franchise owner closed up shop, the Rancho Bravo taco truck that had been parked in the lot took over the lease for the whole property (The Plot Thickens). Since then, the truck has expanded to a larger truck, the size of the Costco carport set up to provide rain…

Salvaging MacDonald

If you enjoy sorting through bits of oddments and detritus and haven't paid the The ReStore in Ballard a visit, you ought to. It's the dream shop of both garage sale scavengers and the environmentally friendly: they go into old buildings that are being torn down or remodeled and remove whatever is re-usable for resale in their store. Instead of landing in landfill, old fixtures, doors, windows and more provide the material and character for another generation of buildings. They even…
