Happy 105th Birthday, Dear Juliet

Wow!  How often do you get a chance to wish someone 105 years old a Happy Birthday?  Not often, to be sure, which is why Mayor Mike McGinn has proclaimed this day, December 16, 2010, as "Juliet Rawlings Day" in Seattle, to honor Wallingford's University House resident, Juliet Rawlings. Juliet was born on December 16, 1905 in Montclair, New Jersey.  She attended Syracuse University, majoring in physical education (could that be the secret to a long life?  If so, sign me…

Free Trees for Planting

We recently learned that the City was giving away trees (for planting) to Seattle residents through December 6th.  Before we could publish about it, though, all the trees were spoken for. Until now.  Jana Dilley, a Certified Arborist with the Seattle reLeaf project, let us know that some folks never claimed their trees.  And now they can be yours. It's been an awful long time since we talked about graffiti here on Wallyhood (some would argue not long enough). But, every couple of weeks, we like to draw your attention to some interesting conversations happening in the Wallyhood Forums. This week, it sounds like there's been a resurgence in graffiti after a quiet spell (which, in turn, was likely due to Zeb's incarceration). Anyhoo, if you want in on the graffiti talk, including some comparisons of what other cities are…

Bartell’s Giveaway

Heidi Heath, the manager of the Wallingford Bartell's shared a bit of history with us recently. Did you know that the original Wallingford Bartells stood at the same location in 1923? It was eventually sold to an independant pharmacy but reopened as a Bartells again in the '70s.  Right now, she says, "Bartells is celebrating our 120th Anniversary as a company and at our front entrance we have an old photograph of what the Wallingford Bartells looked like in 1925.  Also as a personal…
