Oops! – Car Meets QFC

Saw this in front of QFC at about 2:20 PM this afternoon: The managers out front didn't want to say much, only that the female driver was trying to park and kept going and ploughed into a big display of plants.  The building and pedestrians seemed undamaged.  It happened about 20 minutes before I got there.  Probably a case of hitting the gas pedal instead of the brake?  Also, this was a Disabled spot but the license isn't disabled and I…

Let The I-5 Noise Abatement Begin!

With any luck, southeast Wallingford may have its wish granted for less noise from the I-5 Express Lanes overhead--at least that's WSDOT's goal as it begins its I-5 Ship Canal Noise Study; but don't break out the bubbly to celebrate just yet.  The study involves installing 700 noise absorbing panels on the ceiling of the Express Lanes over the south end of the Ship Canal Bridge, and they'll be monitoring the noise levels for three years for their effectiveness before securing…

Local Authors At Not A Number

The Wednesday Book Signing for authors Nick Licata and Rita Amer was bright, muffled, and intimate. They sat comfortably in the leopard print booth provided by Not A Number’s eclectic ambiance and chatted with each other as they waited for people to stroll in. I sat myself next to the snack table, munching on chocolate cookies and sipping apple juice as I evaluated the scene. Rita is an upbeat woman with a creatively elegant fashion sense; a beautiful cream blouse with…

Warm Yoga in a Cool Space

With all the hustle and bustle on the outside, you might not imagine you’d find a peaceful oasis in the small green bungalow next door from the 45th Street Clinic.  Yet once inside, Sutra Yoga and Wellness Center is warm and relaxing.  Even on the dreariest Seattle days, the plant-filled room with brightly colored walls and their signature painted tree helps to lift my spirits and renew my senses, while the warm air takes the damp chill out of my bones.…

Mystery Science Theater

Here's the mystery: heckling movies in a movie theater: bad. Heckling movies as the premise of a TV show: awesome. And there's the puzzle of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (or MSTK3, as it is known to its hard-core fans): why is it so amusing to watch bad movies and hear them mocked? Well, you've got the opportunity to find out this Thursday, June 10th at 7 pm at (Wallyhood sponsor) Scarecrow Video, just a few blocks away in the University District…

Go Postal (in a Good Way)

Stopped by the Wallingford Post Office the other day and noticed a sign that USPS is hiring.  You apply online and there are a variety of "Peak Season Casual Positions" around the state: Go to www.usps.com/employment Select "search jobs online" Select "Washington" only Click on "start" Sounds like a good way to get economic stimulus along with some exercise and a chance to snoop into what mail people are getting.  By the way, aren't we lucky that the people who work…

Sex and Babies: Now Playing

Over the past few weeks, I've seen two movies that clearly had me pegged as their primary target audience. Well, perhaps I'm more like riding the outer fringes of the newest consumer demographic, which Madison Avenue has dubbed, the "Nestie." The Nestie, like the Soccer Mom and Nascar Dad before it, is the new purchasing shzat. They are women in their mid 20s to mid 30s, who are on the cusp or in the throws of planning weddings, buying homes, and having babies. Apparently, this…
