Treehouses Wanted

Among our many fetishes, count the tree house. It doesn't matter whether it's old club-house style tree house, banged together our of scavenged plywood, scraps of two-by-four and Grandpa's nails, rope ladder dangling below a "NO GURLZ ALOWED!!!!" sign, a Dwell-style ultra-modern tree house or some crazy sphere suspended in the middle of the air, we just love 'em. Being so high off the ground, it feels safe and distant from the worries of the world. There are no deadlines or…

Colbert Bus Stop

Every neighborhood has its iconic symbols. Fremont has the Troll and Waiting for the Interurban. Green Lake has, well, Green Lake. Ballard has condos. Now, Wallingford has acquired its second iconic symbol. Yes, we have the Food Giant / WALLINGFORD sign that adorns the top of the QFC, and now we have...the Stephen Colbert Bus Stop. Yep, in the dark of night (or perhaps during the day, we're really not sure), Wallingford nationalists designated the bus stop on 45th Street in…

Alphabet Monkey Soup…Mmm Mmm good

Alphabet Soup Children's Books hosted the rock'n local kid's band, Recess Monkey, last Saturday March 6th. The news about the concert must have spread far and wide because this sweet little children's bookstore was jam packed when we arrived a few minutes prior to set time. I stood outside with about twenty other parents, bopping my head and tapping my feet to the boisterous rhythm as the band started off with Moon Boots, from their most recent album, The Final Funktier. My…

Puppets for Families

Saturday afternoon Drew Derby, King County librarian, storyteller and puppet master, performed a benefit show in the Community Room at FamilyWorks. A packed house of about 100 attentive audience members, of all ages, were treated to several stories and songs from a wide range of traditions. Raising close to $400 dollars for FamilyWorks (well over the $2 suggested donation price), this event was a resounding success and very entertaining, even for the adults. Your next opportunity to support a good cause…

Another Kid on the Block

Back in November, we mentioned that Next Door Media, the Ballard-based company that controls a host of "hyperlocal" blogs such as My Ballard, Phinneywood, Fremont Universe, Queen Anne Review and Magnolia Voice, was recruiting someone to write a Wallingford blog for them. At the time, we invited you all to come join us on these pages, and the many writers you've seen here on Wallyhood since then took us up on the offer. Truly a blessing. Meanwhile, we saw today that…
