More Yard Art

We were peddling up Wallingford Ave the other day, dragging our tow of delicious Essential Bakery dumpster-diver bread when we noticed this beauty towering over the sidewalk. The beauty we're referring to is the the piece of art, not the artist, Marvin Oliver, standing next to it (who's not bad-looking, mind you, but not as stunning as his work). The piece is suggestive of an oil drill, perhaps, pulling power and myth from the earth. The images on the side, we…

Hey, who's that standing next to Mayor Mike McGinn? Why, it's Helen Ippolito of Wallingford's Hamilton School. Along with Page Robinson of Hamilton, she was one of the winners of the City's Neighbor Appreciation Day Art Contest. As one of the top two winners, Helen's art will be featured on greeting cards distributed at libraries and community centers around the city. Nice. Oh, and that's Councilmember O'Brien on the other side of her. His art appears nowhere that we're aware of.

Adam’s Elementary Auction

Hot on the heels of the request for auction donations for the Meridian School, Jacqui writes: Adams Elementary is one of Wallingford’s SISD cluster schools, and the only public elementary in the Northwest to feature complete arts integration in its curriculum. The arts curriculum is funded by the PTA, which in turn is largely funded by our annual auction: Adams Elementary School Students Reach for the Stars – and the Paintbrush Music fills the art-adorned halls long before the first bell…

A team of 60,000 Sculptors

It's an open secret that the art produced by many "masters" is not entirely of their own hand. Michelangelo, Da Vinci, even Chihuly, all had teams of apprentices rendering some of the laborious details of their work. I'll do them one better: I had a team of 60,000 help me with my sculptures. 60,000 bees, that is. As regular readers know, I keep two hives of bees in my back yard. As you may not know, I've been experimenting with placing…
