Turtle and Ladybug receive props

Recently, Wallingford's street murals, Bubbles the Turtle, and the Ladybug on 49th and Burke, were included in a photo essay on intersection art. The post, titled "Coloring Inside the Lines", can be found on Sightline's blog, Sightline Daily. Writer Alyse Nelson explains the origins of intersection art which started in the mid-1990s in Portland and provides some colorful examples. You really should take a moment to read the article because are are some super cute ideas for communities beyond intersection art. I won't give…

Hoodette writes: I was wondering if anyone knows what is going on with the Golden Oldies mural. Margaret posted an article about the repainting in late August. Now it appears that the mural has been half-way painted over. A scouting trip revealed that yes, indeed, it has been mostly whited over. We popped our head in to get the 411 and were told not to fear, it's not going away, just being repainted. The owner wasn't around, but the man behind the counter told…

Have you spotted this house?

If you've been on Latona at NE 40th in the last week or so, chances are you've probably seen this house and wondered what in the heck was up with the spots. Well, we learned that Green Canopy is the company behind the playful polka-dots. The Fremont-based company buys dilapidated homes throughout Seattle and renovates them using sustainable materials and by making them energy-efficient. This 1924 house, which they've dubbed "Keaton" after Buster Keaton, will lose its spots by Friday so that the construction crew can put…

KAOS Kamp Car Kackle

You're walking down NE 46th Street around Sunnyside and checking out the cars. There's a Honda Fit, there's a Subaru Outback, maybe a Ford Explorer and there's a...WTF? Is it a car? A truck? A monster? No, it's just Kackle, the product of Kaos Camp. This is going to take a little explaining. Burning Man is a massive arts / alternative lifestyle festival that goes on every year in the Nevada desert the week leading up through Labor Day weekend. About…

Last Art Walk of 2011

Last Wednesday was the last Wallingford Farmer's Market of 2011, and this Wednesday will be the last Wallingford Art Walk of 2011. The Art Walk committee had originally planned to turn the Art Walk into a year-round event, but based on community reaction and declining attendance, they've decided to take a break for the next several months, and come back starting in February with an every-other-month event. Tara Shuttleworth, the organizer, wrote: We have enjoyed the past year and trying to make…
