Frolicking Fun this Friday at the Fremont 5K

The Fremont 5K is easily my most favorite road race in town--it's convenient, it's mostly flat, the weather's usually mild, and it has a beer garden. Undoubtedly, the most humorous part of the event is watching the participants in the Briefcase Relay that takes place just prior to the 5K Walk/Run.  Teams of five are dressed in business attire from the waist up, and each team member runs a kilometer carrying the team's briefcase which, until this year, held the Seattle…

Cook the Books!

No, we're not suggesting some sort of accounting scheme. The 5th annual Edible Book Festival is coming to Wallingford Saturday, April 10th.  We're writing about it now cuz you still have time to enter your own book-themed work of art.  And if you'd just like to show up and nosh, that's ok too. What? People bring a piece of edible art related to books: a pun on a title, an interpretation of a scene or character, or just something having to do with…

BBQ with Marco Polo

Wallingford has had an uneasy relationship with the motels along Aurora (see Motel Crackdown, More Trouble at the Italia Motel, Wallingford Inn Madness, Wrong Police Raid, for example). Rachelle and her crew have decided enough is enough. However, rather than flipping them the bird, they're going to flip them a burger. She writes: I am part of a community outreach group at a church off of 50th and Dayton (not quite Wallingford - but close!) and we are organizing a neighborhood…

Puppets for Families

Saturday afternoon Drew Derby, King County librarian, storyteller and puppet master, performed a benefit show in the Community Room at FamilyWorks. A packed house of about 100 attentive audience members, of all ages, were treated to several stories and songs from a wide range of traditions. Raising close to $400 dollars for FamilyWorks (well over the $2 suggested donation price), this event was a resounding success and very entertaining, even for the adults. Your next opportunity to support a good cause…

Silent Art Auction Benefit for Haiti

This coming Wednesday Lucid Jazz Club in the U-dist is hosting a silent art auction to benefit relief efforts in Haiti. The owner of Lucid, David Pierre-Louis, after traveling to Haiti to help his family, is spearheading a grassroots relief effort based right here in our backyard. They are currently raising funds and also looking for several hundred tents. This is a perfect opportunity to make a difference in a direct way. Get behind this neighbor of ours and lets help…

Seattle Youth Garden Works shutters its doors

Seattle Youth Garden Works, a local charity that provided at-risk and homeless youth with garden-related jobs skills, has announced that it is ending operations due to budget shortfall: Seattle Youth Garden Works (SYGW) would like to thank our community of exceptional friends, volunteers and donors for the support we received throughout 2009. Through your generosity, you affirmed that SYGW is doing important work in providing essential garden-based job training programs for Seattle’s homeless and at-risk youth. However, despite our best efforts,…

InterConnection seeks old laptops for Haiti

  • Post author:

We've always been huge fans of InterConnection (down on Pacific near Gas Works) for their work refurbishing old computers for poor communities around the world, for providing job training for people here in Seattle and for selling really cheap used computers and parts to help finance those efforts. It should come as no surprise, then, that they're offering to pitch in how they can in response to the disaster in Haiti. Ally writes: In the wake of the earthquake in Haiti,…
