Help a Texan Out

We know, we know, we swore off the car prowl posts, for fear of creating the false impression that Wallingford is less safe than other neighborhoods (it's not), but here you've got a traveler getting a bad impression of our little 'hood, so maybe we can help her out. Karen writes: Hi, I'm from TX, but I was just visiting a friend here in Wallingford for one evening.  My friend wanted to show me the city lights from Gas Works Park…

Lower Wallingford Retail Burglaries

Todd Olsen, co-owner of Solsticio cafe at Stone Way & 35th in lower Wallingford, is serving up some bitter news this weekend.  Solsticio & another nearby retail business were broken into & burglarized early Friday morning. One of Solsticio's floor-to-ceiling windows was smashed out & a robber entered the building, rifling through the till before absconding with the shop's digital music player.  Solsticio doesn't keep cash in the building overnight, so the music device & the window were the only real losses, but that's gotta suck if…

New approach to crime reporting

Our crime coverage may have been doing more harm than good: it's been erratic and spikey, given the sense that there may suddenly be a crime wave on, whereas our reporting has more to do with what we happen to hear about than what's actually going on. To help address this, we have, at readers' request, created a Wallyhood Crime Forum, where people can let neighbors know about the criminal activity they've seen. We'll roll up a summary of that once…

Wallingford Crime Watch

Honestly, we don't like to harp on crime too much in these pages. It gives the impression that Wallingford is crime-ridden, which it's not really, no more so than any other neighborhood in Seattle: it's just crime-reporting-ridden). So no, mom, we don't really need a burglar alarm, but it's always nice to hear from you! It also feels like pandering. Our readership always goes up whenever we run a story on crime. Next thing you know, we'll be running "6 Wallingford…

More broad daylight burgling

Hot on the heels of our neighbors at Latona and NE 42nd St discovering a burglar in their house at 7 pm, this was just posted to the Green Lake Mom's list by a member who lives in the 50th and 2nd Ave NE area of Wallingford: Wanted to give everyone a heads up that we were just burgled. A woman, about 40 with short dark hair, mixed race walked into our house at about 2:00pm today. My husband was home,…

Break-in

Jill just sent us this note moments ago: Get the word out: lock your doors!  Turn on your lights! At about 7:00pm this evening, burglars broke into our house through the back (mudroom) door, went straight upstairs and ransacked our bedroom.  My husband came home and scared them off - he heard people leave through the back door.  We have gone to tell a handful of neighbors while we wait for the police... We are at 4065 Latona in the brick…

Correction: Wrong police raid

  • Post author:

With great shame, we must issue a correction. Yesterday, we described a police raid at the Wallingford Inn, in which a crack-crazed Seahawks fan broke into rooms and assaulted people. We thought that this happened Wednesday night. Well, as it turns out, the aforementioned events happened last week at the Wallingford Inn. What happened this Wednesday was a whole different story, again covered by the fine folks over at the Seattle Crime blog: Seattle SWAT, patrol and robbery taskforce units descended…
